New Fords being stolen without keys - focustitanium1
Apparently there are vast numbers of Fords that are being stolen without keys in the UK - as the owner of 2 new newish Fords, I'm concerned! Does
anyone know for sure how criminals are doing this? Any tips to upgrade security would be welcome!

Cheers!

I doubt it is a 'vast' number. Apparently it is possible to start a car via the diagnostic port using suitable software. I wouldn't worry. cars are still a lot harder to start than in the days of hot wiring. Anything can be stolen by a determined enough criminal. All you need to do is ensure that your car is not worth the effort.

Unfortunately it is not just Fords that are being stolen.Any late modern car that has an electronic steering lock,(a lock where there is no provision to insert a key to unlock mechanically)can be electroniclly by-passed by suitable illegal software.Loads of 2011/12 Bmw ,Mercs Audis going missing via this method.Best suggestion I can make ,is to locate the position of the 16 pin diagnostic socket and try to move it slightly to a hidden area. There is usually a small amount of free cable to enable you to do this. Also back to the old days, use a Krooklock or similar.hth

Krooklock?! 30 seconds with a rake, or 10 seconds with a bump key.

I've been tempted to move the obd port, but apparently they are connecting a device to wires under the dash, so there wouldn't be much point. It's going back to the days of the good old chain! My cars arent keyless entry - just the good old fashioned key.

Old school Fords were very easy to get into and nick. Not that I spent my childhood doing that of course.

An EU regulation cock up, when will the bureaucrats learn to live in the real world !!! Probably never...grrrr...

Don't buy a car that doesn't need a key turn to start it, simples.

Cars with keys have been stolen easily for years.

I'd still rather try and defend my car against a thief who needs a computer, rather than a thief who needs a half-brick and a crowbar.

The ultimate way to prevent car theft by any method is to install one of these:-

If they want your motor they will take it, and it dont have to be driven

Best thing you can do is fit a Ford badge on the bonnet and boot, that'll put them off

Vast is an understatement.

My 2009 Fiesta Titanium has been stolen. Police explained to me they had just seen the same thing in Canvey (I'm from Southend). We were then made aware of two others in surrounding aread (Hockley, Rayleigh) in the following days.

So far, this is my understand of the the process (what the police have told me):

1. theives will go to an area e.g. Sussex and take plates of vehicles they know they can steal e.g. a black fiesta

2. Theives will go to a different area e.g. Southend and drive around until they find a vehicle parked in a place they feel safe to steal it from the same description of the plates they have already stolen

3. Use their skills to enter and start the car without damaging it (I am yet to hear a way of avoiding this)

4. Drive the car to a safe location e.g. warehouse until they transport a truck load abroad, remove the vehicle numbers (VIN etc) and you or the police never see your car again.

The police were rather honest with me and said that because it hadn't been found abandoned and hadn't gone through any cameras I wouldn't see it again and explained the above to me as this is currently what is being investigated.

Spread the word! Get trackers, ensure alarms are on and avoid parking your car in an unlit, uncamered area.

Another solution is to fit a lockable cover on the OBD port. There are a number of these on the market now.

Another solution is to fit a lockable cover on the OBD port ...

Lockable cover? The whole car is 'lockable' ...

If you smash the window you can get in the car easily enough but a lock on the OBD port would slow people down more.

So an after market steering lock is the best answer?

How about a simple chain and big padlock?

What are Ford doing as a long term fix?

Probably

1. Ignoring it and hoping the problem goes away.

2.Blame the owner.

Why is access to the ECU via the OBD port not protected by a password unique to the vehicle? Just about everything else electronic in your home is protected by a password.

How hard can it be?

Easy to do I expect but what happens if you lose the password?

Retained by the firm/dealer? That wouldn't come under this information sharing system, surely? Or else radio codes would too.

Or different user access levels - diag/configure/etc

Same as what happens if you lose the log-on code for your computer - you are f****d, but what is more important is, so are the thieves.

pc codes can be found using the right software, all the time you have a security system in place there will always be hackers, hardware and software, all they can do is any security code will have to be encrypted to a high level

it is on most pc`s so why not an ecu

Hi all,
I had my 63 plate fiesta zetec s stolen last weekend from outside my door with out the keys ! No smashed glass , I think this is a big problem in essex , I'm in Brentwood and it's the 3 rd one I ve heard of in a few weeks so keep your eyes and ears open , any extra security devices I'm sure would help as standard stuff obviously is no match for the people taking them !

When I was at Uni in the late 60's one of the students, a member of whose family worked in a Ford Dealership had a chain some 3 foot long of keys to Ford models.
His practice was to take a car from his home town and bring it to Uni and run it around for a month or so until the next time he went back home when he would drop it near to where he had taken it. His return to Uni whould be in another car he had taken.
What happened to him after Uni I have no clue, but I doubt he was the only person doing it .

At about that time, neighbours of ours ran a Cortina which visited Liverpool regularly. One day she returned to the car and surprised a local scally enough to cause him to scarper leaving his pass key in the lock. Don't remember whether it came in useful later ....
