will putting the leads on the battery the wrong way round when jump starting

cause the ecu to fry... as car now will not start..

immobiliser light flashes all dash lights illuminate ..mileage shows..

central locking works off the fob...and bleeps once on close..

i have just purchased it and had to leave it there... i was banged to rights as i had not seen it running...

so i now have to go back and have a look... any recommendations for ecu rebuild..

as an ecu swap out will give me more greif i hear..

or is it the dreaded heater wire and dash problem..

is there a way of checking ecu ..

any advice is welcomed..

cheers..

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

ive been advised that it might not have fried the ecu...

its possible the immobiliser has locked down..as the battery was flat..

how do you reset it .. so i can check..

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - dieselnut

How old is the car? Is is CR or IDI with rotary mechanical injection pump.

If the latter it only needs power to the inj pump fuel solenoid & glow plugs to start. You could feed these direct from the battery, then once running you can dispense with the glow plug feed.

Google for ECU repairers in your area, bba-reman are a well know repairer.

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

hi thanks for post....

its a 98, 3301cc v6 petrol.. with the older type fuse board.not as fitted to the 99/2000.. big 40 A fuses..in the middle i compared it today on another one....which has a polarity protection thingy... but not sure if my model has one ? daimler/ benz !!!! iam told ?

no fuses appear to have blown..cant vouch for relays... all ancilliaries work..iam not so sure immobiliser is functioning correctly i need to eliminate that ... there isn't a fuel relay reset button on these... but no fuel or spark...i assume..as the motor just turns with no pops or attempts to fire..

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - dieselnut

Sorry, I assumed wrongly that it was diesel, so ignor my above comments except for the ECU repair. If the immobiliser light is flashing then either the ECU is as you say fried, or it just isn't recognising the key, is there another key to try.

In any case I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes then try again with a fully charged battery.

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

no alternative key...so its a do as you said... i will try that tomorrow,

ive been quoted rediculous money on an ecu rebuild...

i can get an ecu keys fob relay/fuse boards ignition barrell alarm box etc..to swap out all parts etc so no mach codes are conflicting ..for less than a £100.. fiddly job but not a major one.. unless theres a major complications i dont know about..???

i have an auto electrician on hold for tommorrow, who will cost me £45.. for a diagnose...

then if its the ecu i gotta get it home by trailer .. more money etc...

i think just get it here and buy the whole nine yards and swap out every thing as i will probably have to do that afterall any way !! getting the identical ecu of course...

saving meself £150

all this of course after the basic tests done ?

i have a vag/audi code reader...u281.can protocol cars compatible ?

can i use this to see if there are any codes and erase them..or do i have to have a universal one...

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - dieselnut

If you're in AA or RAC etc get them to recover you home as you've broken down, then won't cost you.

I would think it's cheaper to get the ECU repaired if faulty, just the one unit to remove & less chance of complications arrising freom incompatible parts. Possibly only blown a power regulator in the ECU.

I somehow don't think your code reader will work but worth a try.

As I said, try disconnecting the battery for a few mins first, best of luck.

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

hi.. i tried the disconnect fron battery route, after the initial episode..

however it was only for a few minutes... i will try it again when i go to see it today .. i hear you have to leave it for a good half hour ..touching the cables togeather to dissipate the capacitors etc... then turning on the ignition half way for 10 mins then off then start...

i will check the heater matrix wire while this is doing...

i am not in the aa/rac yet...iam doing that today just incase not sure how that will work on a new purchase..... i will strech the truth obviously !! shhhh...

i was going to drive the vehicle home under the any driver policy of the previous owner and insure and do all the legal stuff the following day...

but as the owner claims i broke it iam now on my own !! as they are now on their annuals, so cancelled the policy yesterday....

so ill have to try the recovery route after insuring it and getting an aa/rac membership...

b***** nightmare..!!!!!!! not the best way of doing things but i didnt anticipate this.

any pit falls on doing it this way or should i leave the vehicle there for a few days as the aa/rac may workout the "blagg" or are they not that dilligent ?

once home .... if recovered i will remove the ecu ...if you say its probably just a power regulator ... would that just be a capacitor on the pcb... on the negative input.. or is it a little more complex..

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - dieselnut

Think you will have to wait a day or two before you can use AA/ RAC after joining, read the T's & C's.

Parts that may require replacement in the ECU will be integrated circuits, not something to be attempted by anyone who isn't very dextrous with the soldering iron & has the knowledge to find the faulty component in the first place.

Make sure you have checked all the fuses for continuity, not just a visual look.

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

yes.. for the breakdown cover i will wait till monday now .just to be sure... f.f.fs..

but the insurance and breakdown cover are less than a tow etc...

once home i can fettle.....

i will inspect the full monty.. as you say..

iam ok with a soldering iron... i have some basic test equipment and will do a thourough check, but yes if its not obvious i will get a local auto electrician to come round....

i might just sell it once its here an be done with it.... i havnt got the reources to fill a money pit...

shame cus appart from that i doubt i would get an lpg one for the same money i paid for it.. no obvious comments pls. !!! it has crossed my mind ...but the mitigating circums..do not tally so i guess its down to me... as the position of car it was definatley driven there..and its off a charity....and the people are amiable... just bad luck i guess..

to be continued....... thanks so far.... :(

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

well ....

this is a good one..

i have read all the "fix" solutions on this site and tried every one of them..

heater earth nothin, clocks ,nothin. shut down relays and fuel pump relays...

so whats the situation?

the alarm almost works i think. the key i can remove in any setting on the turn cycle,

so the barrell is knakked for sure...... but new barrell and key ...is that a reprogramming proceedure,?

the alarm indicator flashes consitently in 2 second intervals costantly after the initial rapid flash of recognition, the engine turns fine and all the monitors on the dash work,

however here is the interesting one, the mirrors open when alarm is fob de activated or door is opened...

but when door is shut or ignition to start, they close.!!!! not very american that .lol

..turn column switch to constantly open no change on other proceedures...

just one curiosity, are all the relays ..lock down etax and fuel relay etc in the fuse box in the engine bay and the footwell the same as they have different product codes on them...but same function?

but all pass the continuity test however..

ive had the dash cowling off and can not find the alarm box.....?? do i have to remove the metal plate..?

i also removed the memory fuse in the main fuse box ... did that cause the mirror issue.... stereo no prob...

so the key is a worry .... is it secquenced... would that cause an issue...that would give the same symtoms...

or do i go for the hard lock down ecu ??

or the whole 9yards and do the ecu key barrell and the like and hope ?

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

sorry but was in a house full.... i mean change the whole lot out...

if so.... the "problems" if i do, is the conflict in vin number and mileage just a re sale issue or will it cause a problem as it is not in synch....? and need to be set properly..

as its £40 for a diagnose and re move errorsetc but £200 for a re calibrate..

for putting in data that takes 10 minutes i can not justify. if it dont cause a functionality problem... just a authenticty isssue... bothered... as i dont intend selling it. if i can sort it.

and a full replace ecu fuse box upper and lower. key, barrell, fob, alarm box, gear box module for less than a £100..... is it tha simplessssss

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

oh well if the many who have read this...having the same problem...

consider this...i cant belive i didnt check this basic thing..

i had a diagnosis mechanic come round with his all singing snap on diagnostic tool...

plugged it in 10 mins or so later... no error codes. everything is as it should be....

did you check spark ?? enqired he .... well i said i didnt as its not firing at all, due to the other problems i assmed its not that obvious...

WRONG !!!!!!!!!!! once the plugs got un welded from the block... the leads were also shot and when the spark chekkers were connected a lovley spark ..... pity i wasnt a bright spark ...

the gap in the plugs had a gap that was so big i cold fit a yale key in it...and no electrode.. looked like they were the originals ... lpg wear no doubt..

so a call to jeep chrysler parts in colindale, london 02082005500 (off flea bay)... a set of plugs and quality leads from the states oem ... £30 all in, may just have cured the issue. i cant get them till tues day ... but i will give it a go..

i asked for the platinum as i have an lpg ...he said the copper ones run better on his 3.3.lpg.... @ £1.99.each.!!! bargain...

. so that saved me even more... euro parts want a £10.+ each and £23,50 for the leads..

i am hoping this is it, as i wouldent have a spark if anything else had gone i presume...thats if it runs ok...but thats the next bit..

oh, and the fella only wanted a £10 of his £40 call out charge, as he said he has done nothing......he gave me an extended plug spanner too, as he said he found it and he only uses snap on, its not what he would use for work.... happy days.....a very nice brazillian guy who loves moggie minors..very professional and a proper nice workshop in his high top...

now the painfull bit of a swap over...those rear bank 3 aint easy to get too..... i can feel the knuckle crunch already....ive pre empted the mechanic i may be giving him a call as my tool kit could be better so if i need some specialist help..he will be comming back...

could it be that simple ????? if so ive got meself a nice bargain if it turnes out to be this.... tbc...

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

remove wiper cowling.... easy acess to plugs and leads...very clever.!!!

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - Simoncelli58

Good Luck with this one - I've got my pop-corn out already !

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

thanks mikyh.... ye i wish i was readin this, not doing it...lol

.. ive never worked on a yankie before....strictly audis....pre 91 .... 20v turbo type...

so...am i in for the labrynth of gremlins or is it just that simple....

drivin me nuts to find out and waiting for the parts is just cruel.....

but im not paying £10 for a spark plug !!! and the bank holiday is just wrong...its gonna rain anyway... might pop into local factors as the manager there is very accomodating.!!!!

i hope you got toffee ones.....

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

i coulden't wait...... i got some ngk's from halfords... gsf recommended

bosch wr8lc+

the ngk equivalent is zgr5a.... i hope...

so after removing the wiper cowling...the horror of the inlet manifold became apparent...

10 mins later its off with no dramas..phew !!.

plugs swapped along with leads... no complications at all ..knuckles intact to boot...

not a hard job at all..

after all replaced and all put back into place ......a big fat nothing !!!!!! but a spark... arrrrggghhh...

so ....... FUEL PRESSURE ? NONE !!!!!......... head scratch....

pump purges on start and pumps when turning over !!

check vaccum hoses and correct installation... seems to be correct...

disconnect fuel pipe pipe....turn on ....nothing...just a hum... fuel filter.!!!...(i hope not a fuel pump) it looks like its never been replaced... not listed in service history ...

so on order for tomorrow..... another £20... still, so far not that bad financially,

too be honest iam glad i have found it this way around... because if i had done that first ..and it started it would of run like a dog...i would of probably scrapped it.....

so im just hoping its not cam or crank position sensors or somthing in the nutty fuel/sensor system it looks a right bag of worms.... but hey at least its getting a service... if it had started i would never of done it for a while, who knows where it would of given up...

i hope this is helping someone with one of these..who can not get it started...

do the diagnosis test..

check spark ...

check fuel pressure

i might save you a fortune on mechanic bills....

i discovered the test proceedures too...

turn ignition off... close all doors etc..

depress the trip and reset buttons togeather...

turn ignition to the last stop before start....wait a few seconds,,,

mileometer will read ...test 999 ... release

then all the test proceedures commence.... clocks move and allsorts....

when finnished it will read error codes..... i have none..... (unless iam only doing half the proceedure..???)

so i guess thats a good sign.. as i guess the shut down relays and fuel pump relays would not pass the test...

if its NOT the fuel filter... ....... .... ....

a big bag of popcorn it is....

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

well well .... success..

after replacing the fuel filter, purging the fuel pump by removing the relay and hard wiring 30 and 87a terminal... the pump kikked into life then grabbed the fuel and hey hey fuel in the rail...

it started..... ran like a box of spanners..... dam!!

so after a little investigation the EGR valve looked to be the culprit... stripped it down gave it a gentle clean, the terminals were corroded to nothing , so a bit of delicate reconnecting it seems to work...

i had to beat the injectors into life with a bit of high revvs...but its on all 6 now...

ive been about 10 miles in it now on short journeys and as the fourums said the ecu has to re learn.... and it now runs very smooth indeed... a bit tappety but i can live with that...

an engine flush and some new oil may just even cure it ...but its not the end of if it doesn't...

iam not sure if its the plugs ngk ZGR 5A but it seems to "limit " the revs at 3800 and misses like a good un...

i will check inlet seals and vaccuum hoses in due course...but i wont be using that much revvs anyway for a while ...too thirsty...

so the lpg installation/service check up is booked... and then thats it....

so all in all the ecu is not fried all relays are fine... PHEW..

now for a well earned beer or 10...that was to close too nightmare for my liking...

as my significant other kept reminding me during the prognosees....

money money scrap it scrap it ....etc we have all heard it before i am sure..

she even smiled when she saw it started, and was even happier to be chauffered to the local supermarket for a bumper sized shop...

suggesting a visit to friends in italy and allsorts !!!

that was priceless ...... doubters....

so with a few spanners and screwdrivers and the help on here ive fixed my "bus"..

so next time i buy a spares or repairs runner !! i will insist on the owner starting it...

but even so with the nightmares some peole think they have got.

it could be a simple good servicing that it needs........ (that can apply in many circumstances too !!!...)

but all things considered it not been the nightmare to do at all

so , if your looking in the engine bay...scratching your head ...with a potential monster mechanic bill to just change the plugs..... give it a go its not hard at all.... and so satisfiying...

i hope this may have given a hand to somone with a grand voyager non runner, over all its cost me £55. to get going... and a few hours..

ill let you know on the splutter... but all good so far.... thanks for reading...

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - Simoncelli58

Nice one boy69 !

I did'nt think she would go,but good on you for not giving up.

ATB - Mick

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

thanks mick..

iwas beginning to get that feeling..

but sometimes you just know... ive had too many audis with silly problems to know not to give up..

went for a nice cruise purrs like a kitten.....

might even do the tappets next service...which will be soon as im not convinced on the ngk plugs tbh...

the 3.3 doesnt seem that hard

anyway...all good so far..

Chrysler Grand Voyager - chrysler grand voyager ecu fried - boydie69

well, after 3 months of the beast sitting on my drive, (other commitments)

i could not deal with the rattly tappets... or marbles in a tin,

i decided to investigate the tappetts etc.....

the rocker cover was loose and on investigation the right end 2 rockers were so loose it was a shame... upon removel the whole bar end was blokked and so worn it looked like a 2 stroke baffle off a moped... gunk city!!! due to breather pipe broken and ill fitted rocker cover...... 2 weeks later a new set of rockers ,bar and pushrods...from the good ol usofa.... for around £45.... she is now properly purring..... i dread to think who the previous mechanic was......proper slakker..

ive put in a new pcv valve and rgv valve (secondhand rgv) as they were broken,

so now the problem is this....

she will not rev above 4k it feels like a rev limiter has kikked in, in drive too !! and the heater after the re set programme is performed it only blows hot to the screen.... i also cant seem to get the on off on off codes to appear.... there are no flashing lights tho but the service soon light is on ? which is also a code indicator i believe...?

however i have not been on a run yet just around the block...this is a must do according to chrysler so the ecu needs to re set the perameters....about 30 miles...sort of makes sence but , surley a bit primative...

any suggestions before i go on a run,as to why ive got issues. also any way of turning the service light off without a reader.?

try spraying easy start into the air flow by removing the universal clip and sliding the air feed ti expose the air flow meter. have someone trun the engine over whilst u carefully spray a continuous flow into the opening. if the engine start and runs as u manyally open the throttle being careful not to over do it then the fuel pump in the fuel tank needs replacing. you will have to empty the petrol out (for safety) then raise the car and release the pump from the passenger side. the fuel pump can be accessed for the drivers side and will be located in the middle of the vehicle. Unless the cruiser is in the air you will have to climb under into the space to carry out the fix so make sure the vehicle is secure and safe and properly supported before you attempt to repair this fix.
