Having just bought a newish car with the balance of manufacturers warranty, noticed that it is a requirement for warranty purposes to have proof of materials and parts used even when franchised main dealer servicing is done, ie parts AND lubricants.

That's right, however a franchised main dealer would be on very dodgy ground if its customers' warranty claims were voided because it wasn't using approved oils etc.

Its because service stamps in a service book are basically proof of nothing. For a few pounds you can get a stamp off e-bay.

Buyer beware as always.

Out of interest, ORB, what did you buy? Did you stay faithful to Chevrolet?

Much to my surprise, yes! But There again 46% off list price on a one year old car is nice. cheap motoring. A Cruze 1.6 from a Chevrolet main dealer too! With all the toys I want and a full size spare too, main dealer service stamp and paintwork and interior as new. other nice news is oil filter £5 (astra) air filter £9. (original parts) budget motoring really. What really surprised me was Nobody at any time asked me for identification, paid mixture of cash and card, given keys and part of V5. Car was taxed at my expense using their insurance certificate, No add ons, no admin fees, receptionist even made me a really nice cuppa, and to round it off put £25 of petrol in it.

The epica was out of warranty and our usage has changed, not so much distance commuting for her, and reading some of the horror stories made a quick decision, but was "looking" for the right deal. Youngrovergirl agreed, and likes the cruze as it is a bit smaller. Out of interest what did Yr daughter get?

I was going to ask if Avant hadn't, presumed i'd missed a thread, well chosen ORB, i've liked Cruze from delivering them when first launched.

Hope you'll keep us updated, maybe an in depth review in due course?

Another Diesel owner walked away, breathing a sigh of relief?

After the Epica, was a bit hesitant, but It really is pleasant to drive, there are after all just two of us, but you got it right! Another diesel owner walked away!!!. The servicing requirements are a lot less expensive, (all those intermediate oil changes for the epica) Petrol is cheaper, Ved cheaper, insurance cheaper, (got a refund wonder of wonders)

As car is a whole lot lighter expecting fuel consumption to be similiar. Initial impressions are, ride a bit firmer, but seats comfortable, bit firmer too, Yes, will do a fuller "report" in a few weeks. But one final bit that persuaded me was that Chevrolet offered to let me have a week long test drive. Hyundai said 10-15 minutes.

''Chevrolet offered to let me have a week long test drive.''

Now thats what i call a sales professional, using good judgement of the customer in front of them (instead of one size fits all) realised there was a very good chance of the sale, he/she deserves their pay, well done them.

It also shows that they've got enough unsold cars lying around to loan them out for long periods - I wonder why they've got so many unsold cars !!

I've happily bought Korean - but Daewoo weren't even on the long list!

I don't know much about Chevrolet - are the (originally) Daewoo models the same but with a new badge? That is, manufactured in the same place etc? My mum had a Matiz (X-reg) and it was horrible!

Well internet explorer went to the dogs, now chrome has, so try firefox..

RT, first, remember how we used to laugh at toyota in the 70s.. and honda.. and the hyundai stellar in the 80's. anyone who thinks he will get my business on the basis of a 10 minute test drive after being interrogated for 15 minutes about my current car and future needs can. (.............................................................................) fill in as appropriate.

Bobbin, the early daewoos were cheap and cheerful.see above comment...

Oh yes, I do remember how we laughed first at the Japanese and then the Koreans and now look where they are - Hyundai-Kia is the 4th largest car manufacturer in the world having overtaken Ford in 2009 and now closing in on VAG.

I've seen no signs that GM Daewoo (that is still it's name) have made the same progress that the Japanese and Hyundai-Kia have made.

The Cruze shares it's platform with the current Astra but the rest of the car was designed/developed by Daewoo independently of the Astra and built by Daewoo but badged as Chevrolet - it uses an elderly VM diesel built by Daewoo, the RA420, unlike the Opel/Vauxhall Astra which use modern diesels from GM Powertrain Torino which are major developments from the GM-Fiat Alliance diesels.

US car plants are often regarded as lower build quality than modern European car plants but it's significant that GM have decided to build the Cruze in the States at higher labour cost rather than import the cars from Daewoo.

Fully agree with you, but the 2.o diesel is now superseded, units available are the astra 1.3 diesel and the 1.7 diesel. But GM has always been a dogs dinner (sorry to the dog) with its brands. The only point I make is that 4 out of my last 6 cars have been chevrolet badged and have provided me with budget motoring whilst having a manufacturers warranty, and because of the heavy (silly) discounting, buying very low cost and selling at expiration of warranty has meant budget motoring for me. On the epica in straight depreciation, (none of this capital tied up gumph) excuding fuel and ved it lost me less than a £100 a month. entirely acceptable. My case rests there M'lud.
