Firstly, apologies for joining and asking a question straight away but having a bit of trouble with our vw touran and hoping someone here might be able to help. Over the last few days, on two occasions while driving along the car has beeped three times and the power steering has stopped working for a second or so, then started working again fine. I have a feeling the rack might be on the way out but hoping not as we are due to drive 300 miles down to cornwall next weekend. Any help or ideas on what to check would be great thanks.

Does it have a belt driven pump or is it electric? If its belt driven could be that the belt is slipping.

As far as I am aware it's electric, I think all Tourans are.

The pas on these is an all electric steering rack.No engine driven pump or hydraulics.Same as Golf/Passat and variants.This could well be the start of a failing steering rack ,not an uncommon problem now emerging on older vehicles.hth

Thats what I was afraid of. Does anyone know a rough price for replacement and also anywhere in the Shropshire/Manchester area that are trustworthy enough to do the job?

Would a replacement be a straight fit or does it need setting up to my car. I know a few decent mechanics but none that are vw specialists.
