After searching on the net, Went a long way to buy a used car the other day, Found a used chevrolet cruze at a national chain, Good price, just over a year old, so plenty of warranty left, Phoned monday, asked to check car had aircon and that it was working, and also if it had a full size spare wheel, but could have budgeted for that, but nice to have, and final question, were there 2 keys with the car. Was told i would be called back within the hour, result, yes yes and yes. car looked good on the website, (so paid a holding deposit) and when I saw it liked it immediately. 2 new front tyres, and matching brand new spare,, (same size) condition really nice, apart from a couple of minor blemishes on the rear bumper and service history all in order, So, paid and drove off 150 miles home. My fault perhaps for not checking before, but spare key was the wrong one, so phoned, will sort it out in the morning, no news, so called, sorry, admin not in, called later, will call you back in an hour,

3 hours later no call, so phoned, salesman out, called back, saleman witha customer, manager in a meeting.. etc

Phoned head office explained to a lovely lady, who put me through to customer care, who got the salesman to call me. He then "explained that they did not sell used cars with 2 keys." And more or less told me i was out of luck as they would not do anything. I replied that i would pursue it further and he said customer care would just refer it back to them and they were not willing to do anything.

Called the head office AGAIN, was put through to the customer services Manager, explained everything, said i had paid the retail price (which was fair) but as i had asked if there were 2 keys and been told there were 2 keys expected to have 2 keys. Was asked to give a bit of time to the manager to investigate.

within 10 minutes was called and told that the salesman had located the spare key and would post it. asked for it to be posted special delivery, and hopefully will arrive tomorrow.

Manager also apologised.

It does pay to be persistent!

>> told that the salesman had located the spare key

Probably true in this case. Sounds like they knew they had two keys, but someone put one on the wrong hook, so your two were not a matched pair. They've probably taken all their pairs of Chevy keys out to the lot and tried each one to find the one that doesn't fit.......yours.

Doesn't excuse the runaround you were given though.....

Key not arrived, was too late for the Post, Manager will talk with salesman today and key WILL be posted. Other key identified as for "new Aveo" of which they have one in stock. happy to get it back!

''Found a used chevrolet cruze at a national chain,''

And the treatment you received once the shark got your money in his sweaty hand is exactly what you would expect from an average sales bod in a national chain.

If you want decent treatment, and you did pay full retail so you are justified in expecting, go to a small family owned dealership, where your business is appreciated and the customer is to not a pesky distraction.

Key has now arrived, thanks to higher managerial intervention.

End of matter for me, rest of car, and deal was fine.

I have bought 2 cars form different national supermarket chains in the past. I would guess I saved about £3000 on each deal compared to a local loving dealership. On each occation I was told there may be only one key but each time I was given both on collection. With a £3000 saving I could afford to get another key myself.

But why anyone would want to buy from a supermarket and save nothing is beyond me.

T'bird. I saved myself £2000 travelling 150 miles. my friendly local franchised dealer did not have any car close to the one i wanted at any price, but The deal I got was a very good deal. Problem was with the saleman, not the car! I actually bought from a national franchised main dealer chain, but HJ doesn't allow us to say, so there we are.

To quote your orignal post "said i had paid the retail price" which is not the same as saving £2000.

Please make yourself clear, did you pay retail or did you save £2000, it makes a big difference to the advice you will be given.

The simple fact is a mistake was made which was corrected at no cost to yourself thus why are you complaining. We are all human and all make mistakes, its putting things right that matters.

Apologies, i meant the screen sticker price, perhaps not clear about that, (plenty of other cars available more expensive) but have been advised after asking that there are salesmen who retain keys and then someone nicks the car, a reply i got this afternoon from a respected motoring journalist., Again t'bird, apologies if i was not clear enough for you.

To round off this, I have received a cheque for One Hundred pounds by way of apology, with a courteous reply from the customer services director of the main dealer concerned.
