I'm not sure if this is an answer, but the Golf estate is really a Jetta estate, made in Mexico alongside the saloon. I had a Mark 5 Golf estate and the body creases along the side of the car were similar to the Jetta's and not there on the Golf.

Golf estates don't sell very well as the Octavia, mechanically identical, is cheaper and roomier.
