BMW X3 3.0D Sport - to buy or not to buy - guygamps

With M Sport pack, looks absolutely the dogs bits, fairly well loaded but no SatNav or iDrive, great condition for age. £11,500

Wife loves it, and wants it, I am not so sure, I recall Top Gear slating it saying it wasn't good enough off road compared to a Rangerover, and not good enough on road compared to a 5 series, so why buy it?

but this looks the awesome and is in lovely nic

X3 owners on various forums seem a happy bunch

When it comes to 4wd capabilities, there are a) off-roaders b) soft-roaders and c) BMWs.

Like an Audi Quattro, the BMW 4wd models are meant to be kept on the black stuff - and do that very much better than a) off-roaders or b) soft-roaders.

Friend of mine had the 2.0l X3 and after 6 months gave it to his wife and bought the 1 series convertible. Much better on road and more fun.

I like them a lot, as you've found out by now it goes like a scalded cat and can put that immense urge down without any scrabbling for grip, underrated rare vehicle IMO.

Its got to be auto though.

TG comic slating it, don't make me laugh, anything they recommend i would take great pains to avoid.

Anything to look out for reliability wise? I have an 120i Petrol, and is has a few problems ( it is a 2005 car), main issue are the i-drive system mis reporting that the breaks need attention, when a breaks specialist has looked at them, says the disks and pads are all perfect, and the sensors are mis reporting (he gave me a quote). Other issues are also minor electrical, (hand brake "on" light stays on all time). But the car, drives perfectly, and runs perfectly and all the toys work. The X3 I am looking at is same period of manufacturer.

Can you ask him what he thought? did he give it to his wife because he wasnt getting along with it in some way? or did he jsut fancy a small sports coupe thingy and get the 1 convertible as his toy.
