Need help with buying a car... HELP!!

Hi guy, first post on here so please help me out...

Im starting a new job soon, and have decided my current car, just not going to be able to make the journey there and back every day. Therefore obviously I need to replace it.

Im looking for some suggestions in the region of £5000 to £8000 at a push...

Idealy:

No older than 09/08

Dont want a huge mileage since will be doing a lot of travel myself

needs to be relatively good on insurance (since only 19)

Cannot be a huge engine, probably no bigger than 1.6

Would prefer a deisel, but not too fussed

Obviously, goes without saying, needs to be reliable

Thanks in advance guys!

There's quite a difference between £5k and £8k. Why no older than 08/09? I'd be looking at mileage and condition rather than just saying no to an older car, say. Your biggest factor (after buying the car) will be insurance. As to diesel vs petrol, you've got to do a lot of miles for diesel to make sense, particularly if you're looking at reasonably new cars as they are more likely to have the dreaded DPF....

Have a think about what your exact budget is, and how many miles you're going to do. Do you take passengers? Have to carry lots of stuff about?

At 19, it's probably going to be something small, and small engined for Group 1 insurance.

You say your current car can't cope - why? Too old? Too uncomfortable?

Nice to see that fancy education hasn't gone to waste.

Well one often needs to spell these things out for folk like you :-P

Boom!

Anyway, as for a car suggestion; Just get something cheap, straight, with a good service history and MOT, use the rest to pay insurance up front, bank the rest of the cash, lovely jubbly. An £8k car needs fuel, MOT, tyres, insurance etc just as much as a £800 car.

I know there is, I want a relatively new car, unless I could get an older car that is fair nicer to be honest. Going to be doing somewhere in the region of 12k miles per year I believe, do you think it justifies a deisel? Or should I just stick with petrol?

My current car is a v reg fiesta and is just too uncomfortable and is starting to come up with a lot of problems, therefore just fancy getting rid of it and getting something different!

My insurance isn't too bad to be quite honest, even though I'm a 19 yo male! I don't tend to have a full car on a regular occasion, every now and then maybe. And again won't need to carry too much either!

Okay, say I didn't mind going for a slightly older car then, one that I can try and get in good nick and low mileage, what suggestions do you all have?

I would say either a Fiesta as suggested above or a Toyota Yaris - go for the 1.3.

If you don't mind something small, a new Hyundai i10 1.2 is on special offer at the moment from under £8,000: that gives you peace of mind and a 5-year warranty.

Another vote for not spending £8000 on a car. Anything that is remotely affordable to insure (assuming you are male!) will be fairly dull to drive-and you'll get bored of it quite quickly and have to take another depreciation hit two years down the line. What about a corsa? The 1.2 twinports are reasonable to drive in the corsa C generation (up to 06), but lethargic in the heavier corsa d.

A Mk 1 Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI is as good a commuter car as you get. The VRS is a peach but might be a bit pricey to insure. Yes, it looks bland but you can't see it when you're inside!

You can get yourself a very nice car for not much money, and save the rest. If you want something decent for the motorway that will be comfy, cheap to insure and with a bit of pull, have a look at a Ford Focus. I second the Yaris suggestion based on insurance but they are very small...having said that, they're not uncomfortable. Mazda 2 is another good one to look at.

12k p.a. still justifies a petrol fiscally, but you probably would burn off any deposits on a diesel.

If you want more advice you can research certain models you fancy on twitter see what people that have used the car say about it! It helped me pick mine, as its hard to get honest reviews sometimes so just make sure you ask around a lot! There's a website called Carhoots, its like the twitter for cars basically, you can see what people are selling second hand and get loads of reviews too. You might get a good deal on Gumtree too, but soemtimes its just your luck!

8k can get you 11reg polo s with 10+k mileage! Trust me is a favourite for some 18-19 years old over the vw forums. They tend to upgrade bit by bit from the basic specs. Look nice and good resale after few years time! Other than that you could get fabia diesel, Ibiza, Mazda 2, fiesta or yaris. Of you don't mind smaller cars I think fiat panda multijet is very economical!

Kia Ceed Diesel. 3 year old model with 4 year manufacturers warranty remaining will be about £7k. Decent spec, 1.6 diesel has no DPF, reliable but less of a concern as it has manufacturers warranty.
