Aston Martin DB7 - Air conditioning - billatmystic

2001 DB7: AC suffers sudden shut down in hot weather after 1-2 hr of high speed cruising. Adjusting all controls does not cause any response in system. 10-15 shut down causes system to begin functioning on start up. System is always set at "Man" or "Recirc" with fan speed 1-3. When down minimal cold air comes through dash vents, probably passive floww from cruising at highway speeds.

Dealer cannot duplicate fault. Any ideas?

Possibly a partially blocked condensate drain - the water then freezes blocking the air flow - all aircon systems have sensors which detect over-cooling and shut the compressor down - after a short while the ambient heat melts the water allowing the system to restart.

Anyone who knows about aircon should be able to guess at that diagnose and then either fix it or eliminate it as a possibility.

The climate system on these is lifted out of similar Jaguar models. The a/c compressor should cycle on/off as the evaporator temperature reaches down to approx 5c.If the pump does not switch off and runs continously, then the evaporator will freeze and prevent the flow of air across it.So you get lack of air flow and cold air.I think if the condensate drains were blocked, you would get water pouring out of the heater vents and onto carpet.hth

Not necessarily, depends on the ducting design - often it's only when the drain is completely blocked that happens - with a partial blockage it doesn't necessarily appear as an internal flood.

It's also possible that one of the low temperature sensors has failed.

I have been reading your posts and think Ihave similar problem.

First of all this car is in Australia 30-40 degree temp 90% humity.

Aircon works well all of the time however after running for a hour or so when I take a right hand corner my passenger ends up with a wet foot. Cold Water.

When the car is parked there is some drainage water appears on the road, Not as much as I would have thouight. (using other cars as example)

There is no smell of damk water if the car is left for a period of time without starting.

I am suspicius of the drainage tubes being partially blocked.

Where are they located?

Just learn to live without it.

At the age of the car it'd cost more to fix than it's worth.

The OP owns an Aston Martin not a 1 litre Golf.

you system is freezing up, once shut down then the ice built up in the evaporator melts and a/c starts functioning, this is due to evaporator sensor in the side of the heater box.
