Toyota Yaris - Stone chips in window: need a repair? - mikem004

Just got two small chips in my windscreen. They are right in the drivers line of sight, but are only 1 or 2mm in size. So no MOT fail and not affecting my vision. No cracks have appeared.

Do these need repairing urgently?

I am only on 3rd party insurance, so getting AutoGlass to repair it is out of the question. Anyway, the chips they seem to deal with are much bigger, closer to MOT fail (10mm).

If there are no cracks you should be OK but I would suggest getting them looked at, way cheaper than a new screen especially when you are only 3rd party.

How much should I expect to be paying to get these sorted? There look to be some "mobile" one man operators in the Yellow Pages.

Not sure quite how it works out with fully comp either, i avoid big heavily advertised screen companies like the plague unless insurance insist in the event of a breakage.

Its surprising just how cheap you can get new screens put in for by finding small independent screen fitters, most reasonable size towns will have one or two, and i expect a screen repair at such a place would be cheaper too.

Its surprising how cheap the national companies will do a screen for once they know you are not insurred. Had a Golf, no screen insurance (only found out when it cracked) even though I was fully comp. They halved the original quote in seconds to a very reasonable price, little more than I would have paid on an insurance excess to be honest.. No idea how much repairs cost, mine have always been done under the insurance but no doubt if you are not covered the price will tumble. Be aware though, had a repair done (it was an inch long crack near the edge) which only lasted a week, if I had paid I would have been well unhappy.

Yes, I'm sure the insurers claw back the cost of "free" windscreen repairs by hiking the premium the following year.

I got a Nissan Micra screen fitted for 110 pounds a couple of years back.

But my current windscreen is not cracked. I'm in two minds whether to just leave it.
