1999 Audi A3 1.8T AGU - Trouble starting if I stall - Nick Mazda 6 TS2

Recently my Audi struggles to restart if I stall it. I have to turn it over for about 4 seconds and press the accelerator down to get it to just about splutter into life which I never had to do before. It can also have the same symptoms if I stop it to nip into a shop for a couple of minutes then try to start it. Also a few times when i start it first thing before my journey it turns over more times than normal before starting and splutters a bit as it fires. It drives fine and doesnt seem to be displaying any other problems.

I have had a mechanic do a code read but doesn't pick anything up so im stuck on what it could be. the car has had recent spark plugs & MAF sensor and was fine until now so shouldnt be these parts failing already.......I guess!

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Faulty engine coolant temp sensor sounds favourite.May not show as a fault ,but may be out of range.hth

I fitted a new coolant temp sensor approx 20,000 miles ago when the MAF sensor problem was wrongly diagnosed, do they fail this quickly? I wondered if it was something to do with the starter motor as it makes a rattling sound just after the engine fires up and in winter when its cold it squeels just it fires.

You will need to get the actual value of coolant temp sensor through live data to see if it concurs with actual engine temp.Starter motor noise/squeal is a common issue on Vag models ,but does not stop the engine starting.hth

Was the temperature sender an original one supplied by a Audi Dealer. Cheap after market ones do fail quicker than would have hoped.

Yeah it was only a cheap part if I remember from GMF. Not an Audi genuine part. Would have thought it would last longer than it has if it is this part. The thing is, as I am getting no codes come up it will be trial and error if I find the problem as could be a number of things and as money is tight I dont want to spend a fortune replacing parts it "might be". I have seen the temp sensors cheap on ebay so may get one and risk it as it wont cost the earth.

SOOOOO frustrating without having a permanent fault so I know if I have actually sorted it!
