Today I received a letter from LV which said they had incorrectly charged me a £10 admin fee at renewal. They apologised and enclosed a cheque for £15 compensation. I had not noticed the error so full marks to LV in this case.

We aren't allowed to "Name and Shame" but, bearing in mind this site runs a list of Good Garages, I don't have a problem with anyone making a recommendation of a good service.

I was with LV for years but then they started spending lots of money on TV adverts and their premiums went too high.

In my experience, obsequiousness comes in direct proportion to profitability.

I'm another who has just received a cheque for £15 from LV. They were competitive on price, (I check similarly well-regarded insurers annually) and I've been with them for >30 years. Perhaps their customer base is less challenging re costs?

I never get any decent quotes from LV. They always want me to pay over £1000 for my car insurance. Maybe I don't fit their preferred customer profile.

It does seem to be that insurers are highly variable on price. NFU quoted about twice what I pay currently, and were way off last year as well.

I shop around every year and the difference between highest and lowest can be 3x - that's for the same cover, excess, etc.

It's clear that insurers have certain profiles they go for and if you don't fit their profile then they quote high.

Re nortones - NFU quoted me a figure which was more like a downpayment on a complete car!

Re RT I just did a comparison site check for my full comp, max no-claims; cover prices ranged from £165 (Esure) to £846 (AA)

My insurance is up next month so I expect to start receiving letters from all and sundry from Monday onwards.

Well done LV.

Speaking of NFU as above, despite years of good, nay exemplary service, we have finally insured both cars elsewhere, their renewal premiums now simply too much for me and i'm now paying less than half with reputable companies.

Notwithstanding cost, better customer service and claims handling in my limited experience i have never known, local offices staffed by competent polite and friendly staff...just too much for my pocket.

I'm at a loss though to know why companies like this don't profile their existing customers better when calculating renewals, customers who rarely claim and mitigate their losses as much as possible if the worse happens must be worth dozens of claimsRus types, but then i'm not in insurance, still seems odd.

I can understand insurance companies taking differing opinions of high risk drivers, but surely the calculated risk profile of any driver with 5+ years NCD can't vary that much? Maybe they over-analyse the data and find correlations that are entirely conicidental, but they wrongly assume a causal link. You might find that black cars are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident, and wrongly assume that there is a causal link between black cars and accidents.

I'm with the NFU for all my insurance. I find them very good, they come out well with Which magazine, as do LV.

However you have to beat them down with their quotes. I ring my local office 5 miles away, staffed with British people and give them a bit of grief about moving, they soon lower the quote.

They will take the money if you keep quiet, it's up to you to get them down.

I know they should look after old customers, but most firms try it on. My annual travel insurance went up from £75 to £264 with ETA, so I changed.

A***A actually froze my premium this time on one of the two vehicles that I have insured with them. Whilst impressed by that fact idle curiosity directed me onto their website again, whereupon I keyed in my quote renewal number, pressed three buttons (I made no changes to the policy content whatsoever) and the price dropped by £40+ before my eyes, so I've had some of that!

As the Q-Man suggests, you gotta be so pro-active in this day and age...

Well it's always worth a try. Interesting to see that now I have bought a totally different type of car, insurance companies that previously didn't want my custom are now much more competitively priced. I was disappointed a few years back to see no decrease when I changed my title from Mrs to Dr either .....boohoo!

Right on cue I've had a letter from privilege today.
