Whine on a Citroen C4 between 40-60mph? - hallington

I previously had a citroen xsara and there was a slight high pitch whine when you put the foot on the accelerator, but never had any problems and didn't work out what it was. I have test driven a citroen c4 2.0 top oof the range today and I can hear the same whine between 40-60mph, what could it be? Is it just something citroen engines do? I know the mileage is 61000 and the cambelt will need to be replaced at 80000. any experience or thoughts? Plus can rain get to the bottom metal lip that comes out of the bottom of the radiator, becaise I saw water there?

If the roads were wet, water could have lodged there perhaps, but if they were dry then there's probably a leak. In your other thread you mention the dreaded semi-automatic gearbox: could the whine be coming from there?

If you are set on a C4, see if you can find other examples to compare this one with. If yoyu are still open-minded, I'd suggest that you might look for something with a conventional automatic transmission. From what I remember of your previous thread, I think you're looking for peace of mind.

Thanks Avant for your reply, yes peace of mind is important:) That sound was present in my old citroen and I had it for 5 years, with no problems, so I don't think it's weather related. I agree ideally I would have a conventional auto transmission, but for £3000 I get a 2005 car, 1 owner, completely serviced at citroen, it's a 2.0 engine which are much harder to find and an exclusive, so top of the range in all the details e.g. heated leather seats:)

It's hard to get to another to compare as there are very few 2.0 examples and I'm car less at the moment :( I kept waiting for a honda civic locally in my price range and I was being offered ones with 90000 on 53 plates that they couldn't find the service history or needed new cam belts doing asap

My uncle has said it sounds like a faulty air flow meter, as it only happens when i touch the accelerator and that this is an easy thing to fix?

You may get a 2005 car but it seems you are looking at all the extras rather than reliability. I would suggest a more open mind and some research before jumping in. If your budget is tight then long term reliability is more important than luxuries. In your price range there are hundreds of cars on the market. Take your time and consider what the priority is deciding on what you need rather than what you would like.

A Honda Civic with a 2 litre engine is chain cam.

There's good reason for them holding their value.

Gordonbennet the dealers were looking for a 1.6 civic for me and these had all had cambelts that needed replacing. I do understand that Hondas are seen to be ultra reliable, but I've only personally driven a citroen xsara 1.8 auto before and had no problems with it, so to me Citroens are good cars? Yes I like the finish inside, but it's more the fact that it has only had 1 owner, been citroen serviced and lowish mileage that appeals to me.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, my mechanic is going to come with me to see if he can hear the noise on thursday, if he says the car is ok, I will finally be back on the road!
