BMW 5 Series E60 - Should it stay or go... - Aocal

Hi everyone

I've had my 2006 5 Series 520d for about 5 years now and racked up 112,000 miles in total. I can feel the clutch is about to go and i've been quoted little under £1k for it to be replaced.

It also needs a new handbrake cable and during the last service I was told there is a minor oil leak which needs to be investigated next time it's in the garage.

The car is probably only worth about £4500 with the mileage and i'm worried it's going to become a money pit - I've read horror stories about the price of turbo's, is that the next thing to go? So my question is...would it be advisable to part ex now and put the money into a new car or is there not much else expected to go bang on this car between 100-200,000 miles?

Thanks!

Adam

I'm sure turbo failure on many modern cars is due to the ridulously long oil change intervals, if you change the oil about twice as often as they say there is a good change you won't get any engine trouble.

If it needs a new clutch/flywheel how much difference is it going to make to the trade in price? If its a lot it might pay to have it done and keep it, the old IDI engines could be good for 300k or more I have had two Citroen XMs that have done nearly that mileage - but that was with an oil change every 5k.

Pity to sell it, you've seen the drastic depreciation curve, makes sense now to run it for a few more years to get the real value from the car.

Agree with Peter N's comments re servicing, looked after well there is no reason that car shouldn't see another 100k with little trouble.
