Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.9D 54 plate - Leaking thermostat - mss1tw

I just changed the thermostat on my Berlingo, easy job, the new one works much better but unfortunately leaks.

I can't understand how this is even possible as I changed the gasket and used a little silicone grease to hold it in place.

But the drips coming out the bottom don't lie...

Even some RTV/high temperature silicone sealant didn't stop it.

The new thermostat is branded Quinton Hazell, is anyone aware of their reputation? (Good or bad!)

Anyone else had this problem on the DW8?

Thanks Backroomers!

Used their stuff for years.

Never had a problem with them.

Did you clean both faces thoroughly before making the joint ?

Yes - I almost wish I hadn't as that would be an easy fix!

You do sound as if you know what you are doing,so as not to be rude, did you torque it down correctly or tighten the bolts right up ? Its possible that the housing could be warped due to over tightening? Good Luck.

You do make a good point, no offence taken. It was on pretty damn tight, the thermostat in there was French so I assume original, but could be a Citroen OEM replacement.

I did the bolts up pretty tight, I will look into the over-tightening idea thanks!

Oh yes they do!

I swapped a thermostat recently on my car and also had what appeared to be a gasket leak. A turn on the hose clip attached to it sorted the issue. The coolant was weeping from the underside of the hose, running down the thermostat housing and dripping off the bottom, looking for all the world like a leaking gasket joint.

It shouldn't require a great deal of force to get a good seal. When i changed my 'stat, I just finger tightened the nuts and started the engine whilst I went to get some mole grips. Never needed them!

If it is leaking at the gasket the best cure is to run a bead of silicone sealer around one side and let it set overnight before replacing it, makes a nice squashy 'O' ring.

Really good ideas here guys, thank you really appreciate them. I considered one of the hoses too, and thought "Naaah, can't be! You're over thinking this mate!"

Finally had a chance to get back under the bonnet - with a dental mirror!

I apologise for bumping the thread but you were all so helpful last time, and as checking if I have fixed the leak each time involves putting back together, running to temp and bleeding, I'd welcome any advice.

I am a little confused as I thought that I'd weakened the top hose clip by opening it right out, but it's all dry on top.

The leak seems to be coming from the plastic part of the housing itself.

Is it likely this could crack? I will order one if necessary but I can't see it being cheap.

I have a 1.9 diesel DW8 van (year 2000), and mines been leaking from the thermostat cover for some years.

A new cover is £10 on ebay, I might be purchasing one.

This is one cover that needs to be made out of metal though , NOT plastic, its just rediculous.

I think what happens is the bits where the 3 bolts go through, distort over time. Then when the cover is disturbed and refitted, the bolts arent able to exert enough pressure on the three "webs", hence why I prob' might try a new cover .My leak is far worse than yours....
