Ford C-max 1.6 TDCI CVT - Ford CFT23 CVT (C-max or Focus) - gwjl1980

Hello,

I after some advice from a Automatic Gearbox Guru.

My sister owns a Ford C-Max 1.6 TDCI CVT 55k miles-ish that’s packed up can get a bit of Reverse but no Drive.

I drained the ATF and only about 4 litres came out I was expecting more like 6-7 based on the 8.9 litres that Ford say should be in the gearbox system.

When I dropped the sump I found the following and its got me even more worried; there seems to be an excessive amounts of debris, lots of what looks like copper and lots of silver-ish metal, a bit of an O ring and two pieces about 5mm by 5mm with copper on one side.

Bellow are links to some pictures I took

Is it worth me trying replacing the filter and ATF? Or does it look more terminal?

Thanks

Terminal and big expense to replace. Well known for falling apart...

gwjl1980 - please contact me at reg.pritchard@gmail.com . As you might have seen from my postings to another HJ thread I'm in the process of taking Ford and my dealer to court on the basis that product is unfit for purpose. There have been lots of delays and complications but my claim was filed last week.

Hello gwjl1980,

I replaced the transmission fluid at 23,000 miles, finding a fine brown sludge. Whilst I am no gearbox expert, I am afraid that what you have found looks serious and terminal. Our gearbox is now at 35,000 miles and is ok.

The CFT 23 gearbox is in my opinion a reasonable design, it's just that time has shown that Ford we're somewhat variable on build quality.

I recommend that you get in touch with Reg, he and I are part of a small group who have tried to find out more about the CFT23 and come uo with a solution. Reg to his credit is taking legal action against Ford which may prove to a key step in finding a way out of this mess for those whose gearboxes have expired.

A few things for you to think about; 1) Exchange gearboxes are available from Ford for about £1800, 2) It is possible to drive the greabox in manual mode if the auto function packs up. 3) Some parts are available from automaticchoice.com.

If possible could you send me directly your pictures, I'm on calleva2006@yahoo.co.uk.

If you don't mind could you keep us posted as to how you get on.

Pavillion,

Ashford, Kent.
