Nissan Micra K12 - New shape Micras: avoid buying? - mikem004

I was thinking of getting a K12 Micra (2003-on). Maybe an 04 or 05. Private seller.

I have previously had 95 and 99 K11 Micras which were bullet proof.

But browsing the web, there are quite a few reports of expensive stretched timing chain problems on the new shape Micras. Was this problem fixed after the early 03 models? And how wide ranging was the problem?

The K12 isn't the 'new shape' - that's the K13 introduced in 2010 and built in India.

Yes, built in India, Sunderland is now given over to production of the best-selling Juke.

Main production in Sunderland is still the Qashqai. The Note is also made there, as will the Note replacement and the new C-segment hatchback.

Just to clarify. My post is about the -03 to -10 K12 Micras.

I was referring to the change from the K11 to K12 shape.

I have seen pics of the K13, but haven't noticed them on the UK roads yet.

Plenty of K13 about here.

The K12 just seem to me a funny looking Clio. Don't they share engines? Clios are cheaper, and more dealers about too.

New range of 1.2 engines for the Micra - not used in present Clio.

What I didn't realise was that most of the Nissan petrol engines up to 1.6 are made by a company called Aichikikai who have had technical and business ties with Nissan since 62/63. Main customers are Nissan, Suzuki and Jatco, followed by Renault, Renault-Samsung, and Ford.

Go instead for a Toyota Yaris. This car carried on where the K11 Micra finished and they are equally bulletproof, plus they feel more modern to drive. All engines are good, although if you are doing more long distance work, choose the 1.3 petrol or 1.4 diesel over the 1.0 petrol as it's low geared.

Yes, I'm thinking about a Yaris.

They are more expensive than the equivalent Nissan. They also seem to get snapped up a few hours after they appear on Auto Trader.
