4 cylinder auto model R reg, engine stopped, won't restart, oil light was seen flashing on & off prior to stopping. Dipstick shows oil in sump. Any ideas to help RAC man when he comes. Manual says low oil pressure.

i think these have an engine shut down in the ecu for low oil pressure. would say oil pressure switch on filter ousing has failed. try holding blue wire to block with fly lead should restart. if not low pressure switch is either brown/black or white and fitted to rh side of head above gearbox. did the warning buzzer go off behind dash when oil light flashed?
you say wont restart is it turning over?

Both oil switches came up OK. The warning buzzer was sounding & the dash oil light flashed prior to stopping.
Local garage checking it out, they believe it may be a coil related fault. Another fitter said that he had had similiar problem on another Sharan, again thought to be coil/HT fault, he passed it on, so not sure of outcome of that one.
The engine does start from cold but stops when warmed up!
Local garage has the car booked in to VW diagostic check tomorrow.
Will post final result.

It is incredible but the car has not been sorted. VW have had it for almost 2 weeks now & they have tried everything that they can barring one last sensor that they did not carry & have had to order in. The Sharan was driven the short distance to them & after their checks they thought it was then OK, on the test drive it cut out. Now it will not start at all. Known good ECU's & other sensors & relays have been fitted as a trial but to no avail. After the arrival of the new bit due next week they recommend it goes to a specialist autoelect firm in Tunbridge Wells. VW have said that there own bill will be fair & amicable as it has been a stubborn problem to solve.
Can only think it is an obsure electrical fault like a broken wire somewhere in the loom.
Any ideas?

my wifes galaxy suddenly used to cut out for no reason, eventually found it was an intermitent relay in fuse box on drivers side, this relay supplied volts to ecu and ignition, took some time to find. this may of not have any bearing on your problem, but should be eliminated.

ps to previous message the relay was marked k30 and made by VW when I took relay apart it was obvious why it had failed shoddy workmanship - every soldered joint was dry and almost fell apart in my hand.

Finally sorted out by local VW dealership. They had the car for 2 weeks & have been very fair over costs.
When they first got the vehicle in they did a diagnostic, this showed a fault with the engine speed sensor, this they changed from stock. Engine still would not start, other parts were tried all to no avail. Last part ordered in no good either, so prior to it going to autoelect specialist the dealer called VW technical again, during the talk through of what they had tried the tech dept remembered that either last year or year before a batch of faulty engine speed sensors had come to light. They thought that all the faulty ones had been recovered, but no, the one from the shelves was a faulty one.
New sensor fitted & all is well. Sensor £150.
