BMW assist are just about to pay their 4th visit in 2 years to me to try and sort out jamming door locks on frosty mornings. Basically I can get in but the door then won't latch shut. No amount of WD40 seems to sort the problem, am i alone in experiencing this? Or are there other frustrated owners out there?
Any thoughts appreciated

I was once told NOT to use WD40 on door locks and mechanisms as it "washes out" the grease which is applied at time of manufacture.

Thanks for that..ironically it was the BMW assist guys who suggested it!
..apparently lock lubrication had been dropped from the official BMW service schedule and was resulting in a number of similarily stranded drivers for whom WD40 was a possible quick fix - sadly it doesn't seem to work for me.
still waiting for BMW assist..

See above. Cyd seems to know what he's talking about. Not pertinent to BMW specifically, but I think helpful.
Will WD40 melt ice?
If WD40 has been applied in the past, it may now have been washed away along with any factory-applied grease.
I'd suggest following Cyd's guidance, or possibly asking service department at your local BMW dealer what to use.

I got a door-lock de-icer and lubricator from Halfords. The little container has a nozzle you insert into the door lock. Was part of the prize in a competition I won and I've never had occasion to use it so I don't know whether it's effective or not. Maybe someone else has experience of using this?

thanks andy
I'll get my MTB lube out as it looks to be a better bet than WD40, I'll also ask the bmw assist guy/my local dealer what the fix is.
thanks again

Are you refering to the lock or the latch? The latch is the bit that holds the door shut by gripping the striker (aka staple) and the lock is the bit you stick your key into. What year of car are we talking about?

Hi Cyd
The latch, the computerised keyfob seems to have got itself in a tizzy and deadlock the doors at random which means that I had to be recovered to my local dealer..whereupon it miraculously sorted itself out, i guess the heat and running the engine had dried out the offfending moisture
grr..

Oh and the car is 1998 M/Y btw

The same thing has happened several times on one of the rear doors on my E30. It seems to be the latch sticking due to contraction of metal parts when it's very cold. It usually frees up if the door is banged shut a few times but one time I had to tie the door closed and drive for about 3 miles until the heat from car freed it off.
I've now got an aerosol can of white grease which I've squirted into the mechanism. This seems to be thicker than WD40 and will hopefully remain on the metal parts and prevent the problem in future.

Not much help but I just thought I'd mention that my 1992 E34 Touring doesn't suffer from this.
