Spare wheel vs space -saver vs repair kit.

Is there a website that summarises what cars have what system as standard. And, more importantly to those traditionalists who want the comfort of knowing a full size spare is on board, is there a summary of cars whose design excludes the stowage space for the removed punctured wheel?

No longer in production, but the Saab 95 came with a space saver, but the wheel well takes the full-sized wheel. There is a good trade in odd wheels on fleabay for people who are p'd off space savers and squirty cans, or who travel regularly travel abroad and like the comfort of a "real" spare.

There are also some models,like one of mine,where the spare is not a "spacesaver "as such but a full size wheel,just not quite as wide.

This issue has cut down my choice of cars considerably. I would prefer to have a full size spare wheel but I would accept a space saver at a push for the right model. Unfortunatley, there are more and more cars which are being manufactured which do not even have space to carry any kind of spare wheel. Potential buyers should read the specs of cars very carefully and bear it in mind when considering new vehicles. There is absolutely NO WAY that I would set off with only one of those ridiculous puncture fix cans - even to the local shops!!!!!!!!!

Such a list would be very useful.

Something like...;

Full spare / Spacesaver as standard with space for full spare / Spacesaver only / Tin of crud with room for Full spare / Tin of crud with room for Spacesaver / Utterly useless, buy something else.

...as categories. Also, access to spare (is it necessary to unload the car?). Optional item the cost of adding on a Spare or Spacesaver where these are lacking as standard fit? Optional, because someone may well know the situation with vehicle XYZ, but not know the cost or availability of additional wheels. Stowage for removed wheel is inherent in whether there's room for a full spare.

I have quite deliberately avoided catering for runflats as seperate items as, in the event of major damage or picking up a puncture in the back end of nowhere at 3:30am on a Sunday, you're just as stuffed as with regular tyres if you lack a spare.

Maybe we could "crowdsource" this, as with the "real world MPG" system here?

The recent Audi A6 I test drove had the biggest space saver I have ever seen, 20" !!!!!!

Having said that, I still chose to order the BMW 5er with no spare, just run flats....

Our new Doblo has loads of room for a full size spare but it is still an optional extra, which we specified having had 2 flats in 2 years on previous car. I wouldn't want to travel too far without at least a space saver. My Dad did 200 miles on a space saver in snow in his Jazz, he now has a full size spare sorted for him from the dealer!
