Peugeot 207SW or Ibiza ST - Tourer

Please can anyone let me have their opinion of which one of these would be the better buy. I need a car with decent boot space but must have low lip / floor level with lip. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Comments about reliability also welcome. Thank you.

Avoid the base 1.2 70PS engine in the Ibiza. My next door neighbour has a 59 reg Polo with this engine that he bought on retirement. Done 15,000 miles, and the cylinder head needed replacing. When the VW dealer was doing the warranty repair, they stripped a thread on the aluminium block. Result - complete new engine.

What is more concerning for my neighbour is that the VW dealer said the cylinder head issue was common, and could need replacing again. If it does go outside warranty, the quoted cost was £1200.

Thanks very much, will remember that info.

I'm not sure whether you're buying new or secondhand, but the 207 is just being replaced by the 208 and this won't help it to hold its value. There was a running report on an Ibiza ST in (I think) a recent issue of Auto Express where the tester was quite impressed.

As ever, don't pay extra for a diesel if your mileage is going to be below 15,000 a year, but the comment above about the VAG 1.2 engine is important. The 70 bhp engine is pretty gutless too.

Thanks for your answer. I was intending to buy one about a year old. I am definitely edging towards the SEAT, still can't lose the niggling worry about French car reliability which is why I discounted the Clio estate. Renault seem to have an even less reliable reputation than Peugot.
