Volkswagen Golf - Help sought from someone more knowledgable than me - pixiew
Hi guys

Newbie here sorry for crashing the forum. I only have £2.5K to spend on a car, have a Y reg 1.2 16v Clio (65k miles) to sell or trade in. The Clio just isn't big enough for my teeny new baby it's difficult getting her ca***at in and out of 3 doors and her pram doesn't quite fit in the boot!
Ive always liked VW Golfs, need a 5 door one. But they hold their value so much that I can't afford anything much newer than my Clio and mileage is higher.
My dilemma is to either go for something sensible like a Vauxhall Meriva or get an older Golf (2001/2002)
I just don't want a really boring car, I like quite a nippy one.
I took a 2002 Jeep Chevrolet for a drive the other day it was really nice I was suckered in by the leather interior and American styling.
However I've been advised against as parts will be expensive not to mention fuel.
I like the Mercedes A class But my local mechanic says they can be a nightmare with the need to take the whole engine out to get to parts.
I don't know what to go for!
Many thanks for reading this gigantic and very Boring post!!

Wonder what happens if I tell you about my drive to Sc***horpe, where I bought a book on how to pa*** a sentence, and so on?

Added later: Yup, as expected!

Oh no, that was surely not a sarcastic dig about punctuation!? The internet forum grammar Nazis strike again!

Don't worry pixiew, nothing at all to do with your punctuation or grammar, just a little light humour regarding the swear filter on the forum - as you see, it removed what it thought a potential naughty word from your post , and Leif demonstrated the point with a simple, perfectly correct English sentence! Car seat as two words is no problem! ;-)

Amusing, yes. Not as much so as some of the howlers caused when the bien pensant types start substituting "good" words for "naughty" words automagically.

That gives rise to such howlers as the famous writer "Philip K. Masculine area".

Is that why Dick Van Dyke changed his name from Penis Van Lesbian? Concrete

You need 5 doors, reasonably large boot and something reliable and not too thirsty, is that correct?

Nippy and not boring would be nice, but are not essential, I'd suggest you look for something Japanese or Korean designed.

You should be able to pick up a Corolla or Avensis in your price range, for instance.

Ah ok thanks guys. Someone else has mentioned a corolla - something I never considered.

Why so cheap? Are they rubbish? Some good reviews online, some negative ones too

They're cheap because they have zero street cred! That doesn't make them bad though. HJ has little to say in terms of reliability problems and the fact that you can get a much newer/ lower mileage one for your money is obviously favourable.

I've driven a few, they're alright so long as they're the manual ones. Pretty comfortable, spacious, not slow . I always recall them being very "airy" and bright inside. I like that.

Having said that, step from one of these into a Corolla and you'll notice the difference in "feel" - much more upmarket in a Toyota. It depends on your needs and priorities.
