Renault Scenic 1998 - Trouble starting the engine........ - caddyis59

When my daughter gets into her car ,before she can start the engine, she has to turn the remote on and off before it will start the engine. Could anyone please tell me what the problem is.? Many thanks

The trouble is it's a Renault.

Seriously, though, immobilisers in Renaults around that age are notoriously bad. Fix? New ECU. Usually it costs more to fix than the car is worth, so most people drive them until they finally stop and then scrap them. Scrapyards are full of late-90s Renaults with stuffed ECUs.

Nothing wrong with the pre-2000 Renaults-they're very reliable. ChannelZ-carry on blowing up crudely and greedily chipped astras

OP-The imobiliser works as it is designed to. It is a very irritating feature. If the ignition is not switched on within 30 seconds of unlocking the car remotely, then the imobiliser is re-applied. Invariably, the engine will still crank on the starter, which just adds to the confusion. The only fix is to pin the door opening sensor shut, so that the imobiliser is never applied.

I'd just learn to live with it!
