Vauxhall Astra 2001 - Gear Box Difficulty After New Clutch - PeterJamesDavies

Hi,

I would be grateful for any advice. My son took his car to local garage to have clutch replaced about 3 weeks ago. Job seemed to take longer than advised, about 3 days. Garage said job was difficult. About 2 days afterwards he found he could not get into second gear. Garage said to bring back and they would adjust linkages. This fixed problem for a day and then problem returned. Garage says problem must be in gear box as they cannot get it into second even when linkage is removed. We have contacted garage daily for a week and he says he is waiting to talk to someone who knows about gear boxes. I feel we are being fobbed off. There were no problems with gears before clutch was replaced.

Will it go into reverse without crunching, if so the clutch is disengaging OK.

Thanks for the response. Yes it goes into all gears without problem except 2nd.

Does sound like a gearbox problem then I'm afraid although it could be something to do with the linkage. Very unusual fault in this day and age.

They don't sound like a garage one would recommend then, if they can't change a clutch. Sounds to me like they've done something wrong and now they're fobbing you off. Gear linkages need setting correctly, but they're the professionals and it ain't rocket science. If it's a hydraulic clutch I wonder if they're having trouble bleeding it, but if so, why won't they tell you. I suppose you need to just keep taking it back until they get it right, don't pay any more unless they come up with a genuine reason.
