VW Polo 1.4 - '98 VW Polo - trouble getting into 5th gear - h0kum

Got a problem that's just turned up in the last couple of days. My Polo (1998, approx 90k on the clock) has suddenly started playing up when trying to engage 5th gear. Works fine on all the others but attempting 5th almost always drops me back into 3rd instead. I can get it after a few attempts but this is a bit hair raising on the motorway.

I know approx. f-all about cars...any ideas what this might be, and a rough guess how much it could cost to repair?

Not sure if it would be the cause of your problem, but polo's of that age can have a problem with the clutch pedal assembly , this can cause difficulty in selecting some of the gears. I think the solution is a new pedal assembly.

Yes: failed welds. Steering column out /moved job...
