Increasingly I find I'm getting cut up on roundabouts and main roads. There is no serious risk of collision in these incidents but to avoid collision I have to reduce speed. I can understand drivers doing this when traffic is heavy but it happens irrespective of how busy roads are.

I find this behaviour really irritating but if I sound my horn the "offending" driver often seems bemused or reacts aggressively.

Am I in a minority of one or do other drivers find this behaviour irritating?

Getting cut up - Bobbin Threadbare

'People' do not know how to use roundabouts. I once found a piece that said over 40% of drivers surveyed would generally follow the person in front on roundabouts because they don't knwo how the rules work. I can't find it to link to it unfortunately.

I have taken to stopping and waiting even if it is my right of way and I could enter the roundabout, because I have experienced being cut up so many times.

Getting cut up - unthrottled

I have noticed it, if I don't have to brake sharply, it doesn't bother me. With fuel at £1.40 I can see why people are keen to keep moving.

40% of people can't use roundabouts? That sounds like a IAM announcement to me! Surely everyone negotiated roundabouts when they took their driving test!

I think thats pretty true actually, even with the driving I've done over that last 34 years, I still get flummoxed on some roundabouts, and even if you do no what you are doing, there is no antidote for the other guy, who by his actions precludes you from doing the correct thing.

One of the best safety innovations I have seen anywhere I have been, is the dotted road markings on large and complex roundabouts showing people where they should be positioned as they negotiate it. This is a great idea.

Beginning of the M53. Good roundabout that - all lanes marked, dotted lines etc.

I did once see an old lady (in a Jazz I might add) going the wrong way around a roundabout. She was driving in the hatch marks. Her passengers looked terrified.

You're driving too slow. If you drive the same speed as everyone else, then it's impossible for you to be cut up.

True, you won't get cut up but you will get hit in a Ben Hur type manouvere.

I'd rather yield, politely notify them of their error ;D and drive on.

There's an awful lot of drivers who just don't seem to 'get' roundabouts.

Getting cut up - madf

I rarely get cut up at roundabouts. If I do, I sigh , treat it as life and get on with mine.

Worrying about other people's driving is a course for suicide.

One solution is get one of these,

http://roadhawk.co.uk/

if its bad , use it as eveidence. I recently reported a car that used the right hand lane to turn left at a roundabout & forced me off the road by turning left across in front of me ! wedging me out by the traffic island ! Im very pleased to say with the video eveidence I sent he got 3 points & a fine for the privalage so i felt better for it

I find it equally annoying that people misuse their horns...<said tongue in cheek>

Good for you injectiondoc! That's the closest we'll ever get to a fine for being utterly stupid.

I've been forced off the road by a van before now. I had about a millisecond to choose whether to engage in a head-on collision or go for a hedge and some minor scrapes. I chose the latter. I never got his reg and I wish I'd had a camera!

I also had this choice recently - although it wasnt a head on collision.

I chose to collide so I could write my mazda 6 off, and it would be entirely his fault :D

I fancied a 'new' car as the 6 was getting a little old

He was in the wrong - he should suffer the concequences or learn how to drive - simple

I have no remorse for idiotic drivers

Getting cut up - unthrottled

Better hope you never make any mistakes then...

I have to admit that there's a limit as to how far I will go to pre empt other drivers' mistakes, but I would take all reasonable steps to prevent a collision.

I wouldn't throw my car off the road and have to claim on my own policy, but sharp braking and swerving? That's just your civic duty.

Getting cut up - balleballe

It was wet, I was going around a bend at 50mph and my car has poor traction resulting in the back end slipping out it I brake harshly in these circumstances (has happened before)

Who should I risk losing control of my car and possibly injuring someone else or claiming from my own policy?

So driving without due care for the conditions?

Remind me never to drive anywhere near you or any driver with a similar attitude and lack of skill and road awareness and concern for others.

Getting cut up - balleballe

Considering I take the bend at 50mph a wet morning every day - I wouldnt say that I was driving without due care for the conditions.

I get annoyed when there is an 'advisory speed limit' for the bend at lets say 50mpg, but there's always these people that prefer to drive at 20mph - leaving it difficult to join the A-road at any decent speed

It's only a slight bend - but enough for the back end to slip out when breaking harshly - the mazda was shockingly poor in this respect; as it was in the snow too

I wasnt aware that it takes an immense amount of skill fo slow down in the eventuallity someone was driving without due care for other road users. I'm sorry but I don't anticipate someone trying to 'cut me up'

That indicates excessive speed for the conditions - however you want to phrase it.

Fair enough

Perhaps I should have been going slower - but then; i still believe it to be his fault for cutting accross chevrons in a bid to cut me up - in such conditions

Thats interesting that the police are willing to review such evidence.

I wonder how far they will go with this though, would they fine someone recorded dropping litter out of the car window , or speaking on a handheld mobile phone?

Both of the above annoy me massively, but law of unintended consequences - do they then start getting rid of traffic police and having everyone have cameras in their cars instead?

Cyclist experience is that police willingness to use helmet cam evidence varies enormously. In one case even death threats recorded on camera were insufficient until the complainant - a barrister - forced the issue through CPS complaints process.

There have also been cases where police staff, probably mostly PCSO or other civvys, have verbally warned the camera user that they're breaching 'Data Protection' or privacy; neither is true provided filming is done in a public place.

An old scorpio? Never wash it; it enhances the "probably-hasn't-got-insurance" look.

You'll never need to give way again. In fact you could probably put a brick on the accelerator, climb into the passenger seat and fall asleep and you still won't have a collision.

Mr B always says he'd like to buy a total banger and just let people hit him, to serve them right for their appalling driving.

Don't understand.

If I am driving down a duel carigeway following another car & leaving a sensible enough gap, plenty of cars overtake then cut in. The most frequent place is coming to a motorway or A road exit

Getting cut up - unthrottled

If somebody cuts into your braking space you can usually just ease off to re-establish your preferred braking distance. It might be impolite, but hardly dangerous. I'd define 'cutting up' as when someone travelling at a much slower speed pulls out in front of you forcing to lose a lot of speed.

I must confess that I did the mother of all cut-ups the other week. It was on the M60/M62/M60 carbuncle and I suddenly realised that I had almost missed my exit. Yes, you know what's coming! Panicking about getting lost, I forced my way into the queue of stationary traffic, whilst simultaneously bringing my own lane to a halt. I still cringe now. The annoying thing was the rash move was unnecessary, I could have carried on and take a laer exit without much penalty. To anyone in that qeue, I apologise. The manoeuvre was solely down to ineptitude and there was no desire to beat the queue!

I hate it when people do that, usually you can spot it a mile off if they're about to do it. Usually has the letters BMW on the car as a giveaway.

If I was on the inside lane unthrottled I'd have put my foot down to force you to stay on the outside, just to make a point :)

I have (touch wood) had hardly any issues for some years now, since moving to a nicer area. Perhaps IAM training helps, as I can anticipate better. Still, you can't account for complete stupidity can you?

Places like Luton - where I lived for almost 3 years - do seem to have worse driving. I think Luton has quite a few people who learnt to drive overseas, and there are more than a few white chavs who seem to be in a permanent state of anger and aggression.

I've noticed people driving more slowly, perhaps due to fuel costs, and less tailgating. I'm in the Hants, Surrey, West Sussex borders area.

Getting cut up - Bobbin Threadbare

This is an interesting one Leif. I have noticed different driving in different places. Mancs are terrible; probably because they have contend with the most horrible motorways in existence (excepting the M25). People in my neck of the woods are pretty reasonable and Cumbrians are very good about giving way and letting pedestrians cross etc. Scousers are very pushy and aggressive, as you're constantly being forced to make quick decisions based on the actions of taxi drivers!

Getting cut up - gordonbennet

Old Landcruiser, preferably fitted with Aussie winch bumpers and full tow pack...then never ever clean off the battle scars paints scrapes and dubious stains.

You'll never be cut up again, except by tipper/mixer/skip drivers who don't clean their battle scars etc.;)

Even white van man keeps out of the way when you drive an old Land Rover Discovery with large Bull Bars. Dunno if it's the car they're scared of or a woman driving such a car.

I'll raise your tipper driver and introduce the Case Steiger. Get a few of these on the road around here. Made a push on Range Rover Sport driver slow down rather rapidly when one appeared around a blind bend near my house :)

Someone above mentioned driving too slow. Not really, just leaving a safe gap between you and the car in front. Trouble is people do take advantage, so everyone now tailgates each other defensively. Probably why there was a three car pile up last week on my way to work. I can't see things changing with the increasing amount of traffic on the road.

I'll see your Case Steiger and raise you by a Liebherr LG1750...;-)

Incompetent drivers that have to be in front whilst having no manners at all whether in car or not and not a clue about decent smooth driving do make the roads (and anywhere else they happen to turn up) a thoroughly unpleasant place to be.

OK you win :)

Smooth driving? What's that? People moan about the price of fuel going up then I see them out on the roads, foot to the floor between traffic lights then foot hard on the brake, stopping at roundabouts when there's nothing there.

They don't have a clue about maintaining progress. The joke is that they would get to where they're going more quickly and use less fuel if they drove more smoothly.

Rant over.
