I note (with the faintest touch of schadenfreude) that the tesco cars site is stopping trading as they were "unable to souce enough cars" and were selling a mere 150 cars a week, But is the real reason that customers were staying away in droves, as you didn't get to see the car till you paid a deposit and it was delivered to you. Or if the car became unavailable......

It was a flawed business model - no-one that knows anything about cars would ever recommend buying a car on those terms.

Agree, it was a flawed business model, not thought through well, motor trade naivety.

They seemed to think a business model which suits selling hoovers and flat pack furniture would work for cars.

What will happen to those who bought cars? Where they will go for service?

There's just something iffy about taking your car to Tescos for servicing anyway. I'd be afraid it'd get topped up with olive oil instead of Castrol.

I won't even buy groceries from Tesco - you'd think that everyone could look after bread and lager during the distribution process - not Tesco in my experience!

Not many people feeling the love for tesco tonight! Does the dislike extend to Costco? I'd be worried about having a discounted 42" American style television fitted to my car instead of michelin Tyres...

I'm not a Tesco fan either tbh. I do find it weird how The English Shopping COmpany face protests from militant villagers with pitchforks every time they want to build a shop, but the American owned Asda gets practically no bad press what so ever.

Perhaps Asda-Walmart is much better than Tesco at targetting areas where there is no large existing supermarket, so adding to the local choices rather than simply muscling in like Tesco often seem to in areas already well served by Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's etc

I think it's more to do with a large section of the GBP, brainwashed by years of left / liberal / socialist propaganda, having a downer on any business that seems to do extra-ordinary well.

For example a local (to me) news forum has just had a person posting criticisim of the govt for giving grants to Bentley on the grounds that they make cars for "the rich". The same person a few weeks ago criticised the govt for not doing enoough to safeguard jobs at Vauxhall Ellesmere Port

It would be difficult for Tesco to build anywhere that could be considered NOT well served by another supermarket, given the geographical spread of the UK urban population.

The fact of the matter is that supermarkets in general & Tesco in particular have managed to provide what the GBP want & are prepared to pay for. In addition they are able to react to changes in demand far better than probably any other UK business.

Let me tell you that I have spoken to numerous senior people within UK motor retailing & manufacturing & they ALL wish their businesses could operate as efficiently & as effectively as Tesco

I used to work for Asda. Policy is to take on existing stores if possible; for example they moved into a good number of old Gateway shops. Saves them money - why build a new one?

I do love how everything on these forums comes back to 'lefty brainwashing.' Total nonsense but its good fun to read. There seems to be this sense that the Tory-right is the only legitimate way to view something and people are 'brainwashed' if they don't agree with you. Interesting.

The chap has a fair point tbh. Why should our Government full of posh shiny rich kids be giving grants to a German luxury car brand which reported record sales this year while failing to safeguard British manufacturing jobs? I'm not a Vauxhall fan but if our Government's going to put money anywhere in the motor industry it should be to keep Vauxhall factories open in the UK.

Usually the complaints against Tesco occur when they pitch up in a village served by small independent shops because everybody knows when Tesco moves in those small businesses will suffer. Its a major shame in many ways because I like unique high streets with small family run business, I dont like going everywhere and everything looks the same with universal uniformity like in China. But the brutal fact is Tesco can sell things for less than the local butcher can buy them for and thats why their outlets never struggle to sell things irrespective of public feeling prior to the opening.

Perfectly fair policy and it makes sense. I prefer Asda to Tesco personally because Tesco isn't actually as good value for money as people assume. There's plenty of empty shops up and down the country so it makes little sense to build new ones.
