Sunken car carrier.... - Julian
I notice that the sunken car carrier , the Tricolor, has been hit again in the shipping lane of the channel.
Is it any coincidence that the sunken car carrier was hit first by a ship called the Nicola and then by the Vicky?

God moves in mysterious ways Julian. I am just amazed at the continuing saga of huge vessels colliding with well marked and advertised obstruction in the 21 mile wide piece of water. Understand also radio broadcasts on the hour, every hour so can we assume navigators of the vessels involved are asleep, drugged, or drunk ??

As a motoring link I could say its a bit like the Hgvs who quite often in statistical terms pile into well lit repair vehicles on the hard shoulders of our motorways.

I've always found that BMWs and Volvos park inconsiderately!

According to Sniff Petrol (new edition out today) was also carrying consignment of jokes for S.P.

A good read back to usual form for the new year.

Yeah, loved the Sniff Petrol thing, although it didn't point out that Pedro de la Rosa could have been driving the ship.

Is anyone going to move it or will they just leave it there to become a nature reserve instead?

I gather that attempts have already been made by third parties to recover some of the vehicles. It will be interesting to learn what state they are in - salt on the roads is bad enough!

I would be surprised if this is true.
I doubt if any vehicles will be recovered until the thing is refloated, probably in a couple of months.
The whole cargo will be scrap by that time.

Something to watch out in about 8 months at scrap yards ... cut price volvo, bmw etc spares...
I'm sure some unscrupulous types will be involved...
For example, could you tell if a tyre had been immersed in the briny for half a year?
(don't buy anything if it reeks of fish!)

And would it do the tyres any harm anyway? They spend most of the winter slushing around in salty water on the roads here so I presume that they can cope with a long-term immersion too.

If they ram it hard enough with a big enough ship then maybe all the airbags will go off and the ship will refloat.

Phil,

Nice letter on this subject in the paper the other day from a sea captain.
He made the point that the broadcasts are in English & French, unfortunately 90%, IIRC, of the crews sailing in the English Channel do not speak English or French!!
Also made the point that a French Navy ship is patrolling the area but both incidents happened either just before or on a public holiday. He didn't say as much but implied that the patrol vessel might have been safely tucked up in port somewhere enjoying the festivities!!

To think we reckon the drivers on the M25 are a bit iffy.

IIRC, all navigational instructions are in English and ships should have someone familiar with that language available.

Same applies to air traffic control (although the French have been known to only reply in French, but that's par for the course).

So IMHO the responsibility rests with the shipowners.

I presume someone will have put a radar reflector on it at least...

These are my own opinions, and not necessarily those of all Toads.

All the ships that have piled into it already should improve its visibility :-)
