Update on windscreen cleaning - Aretas
A recent thread suggested sugar soap as a possible product for cleaning windscreens.
I have recently been doing a lot of decorating and the plastic bucket seems now to be mildly etched.
I do not know of its effect on glass, but I suggest that windscreens maybe a missuse of the product.

I use Gunk, followed by cold water and then a glass cleaner.

If I remember rightly sugar soap contains an abrasive. Don't use any kind of abrasive (whether a cloth, compound, wire wool, whatever) on a windscreen as it will result in microscratches that will show up especially in sunlight - irrelevant if you live in England ;-)
Stick to solvents such as meths or white spirit, or a warm detergent solution, to remove oily deposits from the screen and wiper rubbers.

I swear by Autoglym Glass cleaner for all non-wiped areas - presumably it deposits an anti-wetting residue, which does not help visibility during dark wet conditions. Might be OK if used to remove traffic film, followed by detergent to counteract the anti-wet.

The service manager at my local Volvo dealership recommends toothpaste, the basic white sort not the stripey sort. It is very slightly abrasive and removes stubborn traffic film.

Being a smoker, should I use smoker's toothpaste? LOL

A Senior Engineer I used to deal with at Triplex also recommended toothpaste. I've found it to be an excellent cleaner. Most glass cleaning creams are slightly abrasive - needed to remove the layer of absorbed road grime (diesel residue is one of the things that makes the glass all smeary). I always follow up with a solvent cleaner to ensure removal of all the cleaner before using the wipers.

Slightly off the point, but I use toothpaste to clean scratched CD's so it shouldn't do any harm on windscreens. I generally just follow a regular car shampoo of the windscreen with a spray of 'Windowlene' and polish it off with a soft cloth. This works fine for me with no smears left afterwards. The old housewives trick of using a drop of vinegar in the water and drying with newspaper is very good, if unglamorous. Decorators soft soap is highly alkaline, containing s**ium hydroxide (or washing s**a) which is in many strong oven cleaning products - wouldn't fancy it on my car - it roughens the surface of gloss paint in preparation for repainting.

sorry, I meant sugar soap, not soft soap and what all these ***'s then? Nice to know that nanny software is looking after us. Hope it's obvious what the missing letters are.

So, should one use Pep***ent toothpaste?

How about using "Cif" (Jif) cream?
Lever Brothers free helpline 0800 776646 (GB only) says that it can be used on any surface EXCEPT Gold and Marble.

My BMW E39 5-series came with a factory applied coating of the equivalent of Rainex/Umbrello. They recommend it should be re-applied by the dealers every few months. As it smears quite badly after a few weeks, I do without it.

PS. Re the exceive use of nanny software: It is an example of how the existence of the software draws attention to the very words which otherwise would not have occured to you. As with most censorship, it has the opposite effect to that intended.

I find Cif very effective. It is vital to wash it off thoroughly afterwards though so you don't get it on the wiper blades the first time you use them. I usually follow up with a cloth wetted with screenwash (undiluted).

As I am too idle to trawl the archives, can learned members advise a cure for juddering and noisy blades?

These are Bosch, not apparently worn, and there is no smearing. They are 22" and fitted to my Citroen XM.

It sounds as thought the blade(s) are not flip flopping. They should reverse their direction at the end of each sweep so that they are being dragged across the screen, trailing the wiper arm. Juddering is often caused by the blade being pushed across the screen by the arm rather than pulled. The trick is protect the arm with a cloth and use a mole wrench or big pliers to twist it so that the correct wiping action ensues.
