I would stay away from both

The engine in both cars (same engine) is the 2.0 PD engine. Due to expensive problems with it; i'd never touch a car with it

The earlier 1.9tdi engine and the later 2.0 CR engine seem to be fine though

The engine aside: i'd go for the octavia as I think the toledo looks very ugly from behind, but you may differ.

I've not been inside the toledo, but the leon interior is a little worse than the octavia; so i'm assuming the toledo interior will also be worse

You don't tell us what your annual mileage is - but if it's less than 15,000 you should consider a petrol engine. The Octavia 1.8T would do nicely ifr you don;t need a diesel: if you do, Balleballe's advice is spot-on.

Thanks to you both for advice

My first choice is a 1.9 skoda but there aren't many about in my price range.

My annual mileage is about 14000 but its costing me a fortune in petrol at the moment about £60 per week for a 1.6 fiat.

I also want my next car to last me many years which is why I was thinking of a diesel.

So you're getting about 30mpg if my maths is close? For 14,000 miles a year I'd look for a Japanese petrol engine capable of real world 40 mpg rather than risk a diesel that could hit you with a big bill if you plan to run it many years. Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrols are known to be very good on fuel and reliable, a friend has one and he gets 45mpg on his commute which is mainly motorway but there are no doubt other sub 2 litre cars from Mazda, Nissan, Honda that would fit the bill and people here could recommend.

All of those!

The OP is getting towards diesel range mileage but it's still worth having a petrol....a Japanese one which just won't die....!

Thank you for your posts, I'm going to check out a few petrol cars tomorrow but am still fancying a diesel.

What are your opinions on the 2.0 toyota avensis (2005/6) and the 1.9 VW bora (04-06)

I'm looking for something with a large boot which is why I fancied the octavia but the 1.9s are few and far between in my price range which is max £5000

I assume the two you're talking about are diesels?

I've never driven the 2.0d avensis - but apparantly they have clutch problems?

The 1.9tdi engine in the bora, providing it's been looked after; should be a real gem
