VW Passat 2009 - DSG Gearbox reliability - Scorpio Mike

I see in various reports a WET or a DRY clutch. Please advise which is fitted to my car and are there differing reliability rates, ?

I'm pretty confident that yours is the wet clutch DSG as I think the dry clutch is a more recent innovation, with 7 speeds rather than 6. My Octavia has the 6-speed wet clutch and has no problems with low-speed manoeuvring; so far it's been reliable and I think most problems have been reported with the dry clutch.

I've yet to hear a convincing explanation of why VAG intrioduced the dry clutch. Six speeds are enough for anyone, surely.

Maybe they wanted a USP for a while? Pity, as a few now offer 7-speed autos

Maybe it has something to do with allowing them to use cheaper parts/materials? It wouldn't suprise me TBH

I can only comment that my 1.4 tsi Golf ( 7 sp ) had to have the clutch pack replaced at around 36k miles.
Via warranty fortunately.

The original clutches were juddering, just lke a manual cars clutch can.

Also I've mentioned before; the 7 sp "dry" model is much more inclined to snatch & jerk at low speeds.
Imagen driving your manual car slowly around a car park, where you cannot dip the clutch will give you some idea.

I wouldn't be surprised if your two points were connected, Mustangman: the snatching and jerking at low speeds must be putting a strain on the mechanism. VAG need to sort it out, but first they have to admit that there's a problem.

My wet clutch DSG problems began with slight jerkiness which I managed by adjusting my driving style, but I did it without fully realising. It then got to the point of it feeling like a learner with no clutch control was driving and a new mechatronic unit was needed.

VW + admiting a problem? Good luck.
