BMW 6 Series - Cigarette smell removal from car - Dude - {P}

My son has recently bought a 6 series coupe that stinks of cigarette smoke - Is there any way to remove the smell without damaging the roof headlining, which I suspect would be the most contaminated area ??

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated - Thank you.

Auto Express has tested a product this week called ValetPro Enzyme Odour eater (£20 for a one litre bottle). It is a product that you dilute yourself (one part product to five parts water), squirt it on upholstery and leave to dry. Tested on the boot of a car with a 'wet dog' smell, and the odour was replaced with a 'fresh lemon frgrance'. Rated as good value if used dituted. Drawbacks: need to supply your own spray bottle; car upholstery needs to be left to dry afterwards. Contact www.valetpro.eu.

Other than that tip i would replace the mats and roof lining. For my 335d it's circa £400 for the roof headlining and circa £20 for the A-Pillars

I think the labour would be 2hours, possibly 3. At a decent indie, maybe £150 - £220.

6 series parts might be slightly more, but depending on circumstances it might be a small price to pay to get rid of the smell.

Of course wildly more expensive than a couple of bottles of that odour eater mentioned. I was looking at the M6 and would be happy to pay £600 to fix the problem, especially if i got the car cheaper.

I once drove a company pool car for a couple of weeks. The long term previous driver was a heavy smoker and the smell was sufficient to choke a person. Others had refused to use the car.

I vacuumed out the interior thoroughly and kept the driver's window down as much as I could, and at the end of the period the smell was noticeable but bearable.

I wouldn't replace one smell with another. Valet the interior and wait for the smell to die down. If the car has been looked after in other ways then it may be worth it. Check that carefully - smokers aren't the most meticulous of people.

I once bought a Cortina with a superb history but the driver had smoked a packet a day in the car for three years. I replaced the carpet, had the seats retrimmed and washed the headlining and all other interior parts every day for a week, but still after three years, if I had left the car sanding for a few hours there was a whiff of stale tobacco when you got in.

The moral, never buy a car which has been driven by a heavy smoker.
