Citroen C5 - Citroen c5 Tourer - 1.6HDI engine - too weedy??? - roscoman

Hi All,

Ive been looking at a Citroen C5 tourer (2010) in the VTR+ Nav spec. Its a nice looker, and seems well put together. The only thing Im unsure about is the engine, as its a big heavy car for a 1.6l. I did give it a brief test drive, and compared to my old mondeo tdci, you do have to work the citroen more.

Anyone got any opinions on this combination? I know the 2.0 engine would be more preferable, but its nearly all 1.6's here in Ireland - 2.0 ones are scarce.

Many Thanks

I ran its sister car 407sw 16hdi did 140k km throughout Germany in one year and never once felt that it was under powered and it was certainly economical.

If you buy a 1.6 HDi then buy the very latest one you can. The earlier ones seemed to suffer from problems.

Turbos blow up sometimes and the DPF can block which is a very costly repair. They must be serviced regularly (probably the most important issue on this 1.6 engine).

As for the C5 itself, they have a few electrical problems but they have a huge boot, are well equipped and amazing value for money.

Which HDI engine is it? The 90 bhp or the 110 bhp with the intercooler. The latter would be fine, I would have thought, the 90 might struggle!

Hi, its 110bhp output.

On a daily basis, the car wouldnt be heavily loaded with passengers or luggage, so I'd hope/imagine it would be ok

mine was in a 307 which is smaller than a C5. Can you access any performance firgures for C5 with that engine installed?

The DVD6 1.6HDi 110 is a terrific engine, all but bullet proof and used by PSA, Ford, BMW Mini, Mazda and others. Provided the oil is changed on or before every 12,500 miles and the cam belt every 100,000 miles, it'll last forever - and give good mpg.

If the bulk of your driving is solo, then the 1.6HDi will be fine, but if you're doing a lot of driving with the family, all their belongings and the kitchen sink, then it's the 2.0 as the 1.6 will just not seem to have enough oomph when you need it.

Work colleague has one, he tows a caravan with it (I'm not a caravan person but he says it's the biggest single axle caravan you can get). No problems with van, 2 adults, 2 kids plus trumphery. He says MPG halves when loaded up, though.

I've followed him from work the odd day, and it goes well, I'm flat out in my 125hp Mondeo to try and keep up, which is surprising.

I think the 110hp rating is conservative.

Many Thanks for all the responses. I think Im going to go with it, as I will mostly be driving solo, and the estate facility will only be used occasionally.

I think its one of those cars that look better in estate form, so it appeals to me visually.

I have the saloon 2.7 HDi which is quick. Apart from the pulling power, I agree that the cars' are bargains - relatively - and so far no problems with it after 33,000. All the extras you could want and no one else has one either!
