For all those with winter tyres - Trilogy

I bet you're all, in a manner of speaking, looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

It will be good to hear how you all get on, with your tyres, in the snow!

Ha yeah, I want my money's worth out of my set of fancy-schmancy Dunlops!

For all those with winter tyres - jamie745

Is fancy schmancy the technical term?

For all those with winter tyres - SteveLee

The missis's C3 has all-season M&S tyres on, mine has General Grabber ATs which are pretty good in the snow, both will be fine - without the hassle of full winter tyres.

I'm quite excited to see how my standard pram wheels will fare.

4 inches of snow here almost 8 hours since it began. All we are hearing now are cars trying to get up the 1 in 10 street we live on. Some people have no idea! Rev it hard and see how we get o seems to be the order of the day. A car is now stuck across both carriageways after trying to turn round!
For all those with winter tyres - unthrottled

Yes, if 1/4 throttle won't shift it-perhaps 3/4 throttle will!

Well done sir, you've polished the ice beautifully!. Wait for the BMW drivers to start blaming their car for being "too powerful": 'Can't get a grip with 300lb.ft of torque in this little beauty...'

For all those with winter tyres - corax

I knew it wouldn't be long before BMW was mentioned. What about Mercedes? Worse in my view, on standard tyres.

For all those with winter tyres - unthrottled

Just an arbitrary example. It's not just rear drive cars. Anything with fat tyres struggles. I live on a hill so I see a lot of cars struggle-for some reasn Audis seem to be particularly prone. I can't see any technical reason-so put it down to driver mentality.

I wonder how many people, who have had winter tyres fitted this winter, will be clogging up the lanes and highways tomorrow to find out how good their tyres are? You won't find jamie or me doing that!!!

For all those with winter tyres - Smileyman

I'd like to ... but won't, it would be tempting fate and a waste of expensive fuel (and, I need to see some snow first!)

For all those with winter tyres - Bobbin Threadbare

Likewise - we haven't got any, just some very chilly rain so far....!

Berlingo did us proud on standard skinny tyres at normal pressures.

Only wheelspan when provoked and even wild handbrake abuse didn't produce any wild slides.

4th gear at 25mph and just let her chug away up the hills.

Of course I still had someone 2" off the rear bumper so a couple of brake tests were in order.

For all those with winter tyres - 475TBJ

About 10cm of snow here. It's not freezing.

That's a good idea in snow, brainiac.

I went up High Beach last night driving around all the ungritted back lanes through the countryside in the snow - lovely. Plenty of cars already stuck on a slight gradient, first line was a full house, 1 beemer, 1 Audi (how?) and a Merc, sitting there revving the nads off their engines going nowhere fast, mind-you the Clio I was initially following was really struggling - must have had worn tyres. This morning I took the missis out into the countryside in her C3 teaching her how to drive in the snow, again, no dramas - not even close to getting stuck on pretty thick snow shod with "crappy" Nankang all-season tyres.

So is leaving more than 2" braking distance.

Too true, I think brake-testing idiots is a good idea. More people should do it - perhaps the idiots will be priced off the road as their insurance records deteriorate.

Too true, I think brake-testing idiots is a good idea. More people should do it - perhaps the idiots will be priced off the road as their insurance records deteriorate.

Thing is, EVERYONE'S insurance suffers. If no-one had accidents, insurance wouldn't be needed, or would be as trivially priced as home insurance.

More people crash, more money is needed to fix the cars and pay for the personal injury claims, so everyone pays more.

Those who go and brake test people tailgating them should be banned, permenantly. If they're THAT close, just keep gradually slowing down, they'll eventually get the message and pass, or you're safely stopped to get out and ask them what their malfunction is.

They don't get the message though - they just carry on tailgating, because they don't have the courage to overtake, or they don't have the power. I've had people on mobile phones tailgating me and a quick brake test soon sharpens up their concentration. More fool them.

Yes my A4 with 235 tyres is terrible in snow even though its got a big heavy diesel l,ump up front.

BMW 5 Series with run flat winter tyres, getting around in the snow no problem. Even managed a 1:10! In fact much easier than FWD with summer tyres.

I live on a quite steep avenue and when it snows the snow packs hard and it becomes impassible to anything without 4 wheel drive, ( It is never gritted because people park in the road and a gritter can't get through). That was until recently. The recent incomers have started forming groups to clear the snow from in front of their houses. I've been living in this house for 50 years now and never seen that before. It's quite civilised.

Vredenstien Wintrac extreme 4's fitted on L/r 4x4

Totally boring ! grip stunning, transmission in snow mode, drove like ordaniary tarmac.

Had to stop on steep hill blocked by stuck cars, drove round and up grass verge & back on the road without even a slip.

Great tyres just not enough snow, worth the money ? YES

I still wonder how much could be achieved with ordinary tyres. In this neck of the woods it doesn't snow very often -but when there is, I go looking for mischief. Haven't got stuck yet.

I've used my 406 in the snow the last couple of times we've had huge snowfalls. No modifications, normal all weather tyres, automatic gearbox and havent got stuck once. I think its small wheels, chunkyish tyres and decent gap between the wheel and the wheelarch helps it a lot in the snow, and the fact its got decent ground clearance for a saloon and theres not much car in front of the front wheels (unlike the 407 for example).

We've got quite a bit here today, not as bad as last winter but still quite a bit. I'll be going to work tomorrow in the 406 with no problems.

BMW 118D, Kleber All Seaon Tyres (with mountain and snowflake). Street is never ploughed or gritted but drove off in 4 " of snow this morning with no wheelspin, round the corner, man in Merc stuck so I had to stop, he waved me passed, pulled away no problem and up the gradient to the main road. Went to the woods this PM with dog, car park was compacted snow, again drove in and out with no problems. There was a Merc 180 parked next to me fitted with Lingalong winter tyres which looked a nice pattern but are they any good?

To be totally honest even on standard run-flats in conditions similar to today the car was never as bad as people make out but it did spin its wheels and I prefer the added security the Klebers give.

With any car but more so with a RWD car you have to be patient when pulling away and accelerating when its bad, too many people in whatever car they have just drive like total numpties and blame the car.

"I still wonder how much could be achieved with ordinary tyres. "

I do have a set of summer tyres & a set of Winter . I can assure you that the wrangler tyres still grip well on 4WD but when I fit the Winter tyre you can drive in snow as if your on Tarmac.

Anyone who says there is no difference is wrong ! there is a massive difference & whilst i didnt have any problems in the snow with the wrangler M&S tyres last year you could slide if you booted it flat out & it could be tricky down a very step hill unless in HDC mode . 2 tons of L/r sliding isnt much fun so with the Wintrac's I have to say overtaking in the snow is great fun & storming away up hills & towing other 4x4's up hill makes you smile.

Here's the revew of Linglong Summer tyres. Perhaps no one's lived long enough to write a review of the Winter tyres....

I had to overtake a fancy Audi in the snow uphill from the traffic lights at Holcombe Brook. Unusual, that. My Vredestein Snowtrac 2s were brill!

So you've been out for a Sunday drive with your winter tyres ... now let's see how the Monday rush hour goes .... with 3 - 4 inches of impacted and frozen snow (or slush) ... looks like will be a good day to work from home!

Will do thanks, hopefully all other truck drivers will take note, too many lardy people about anyway a diet will do them good, petrol stations should run out by wednesday so the walk to work will help weight loss too.;)

For all those with winter tyres - piston power

Pirelli four seasons did me proud last Saturday and Sunday, cars stuck on hills where i live it's built on 7 hills,

Cars stuck going up and sliding down, it took me up with ease at 30 mph no spinning no heavy foot either just comfy, got around the rwd crowd and the boot it in 1st lot.

215 55 16 h rated worth the money there on the front so on rounabouts with a camber the rear end slides out a little as the front digs in, when the rears are worn im getting them all way round.

Happy you bet i am.:-)

What sort of car have you got, Piston Power? It would be interesting to know whether it's FWD or RWD. It seems (e.g. the 1-series above) that RWD cars equipped with winter tyres do better in snow then many people thought.

For all those with winter tyres - piston power

Vectra diesel 58 plate so fwd.

Our european cousins don't have this problem as it's law for winter tyres/all season tyres.

M & S tyres have been around for years just seem more common now with the help of forums like this to talk about it.

How many of you guys carry strips of carpet for insurance ?

My son helped his boss out of a bad spot last year when his BMW was struck in icy conditions. The lady of the house, in front of which he was stuck, came out to watch. She was very critical dismissive and asked whether they knew anything at all about motoring. She wanted them to wait a quarter of an hour for her husband to arrive home with the proper equipment in his car.

I carry carpet strips all year round, because in winter it's the civil thing to help people who are blocking you in, and in summer the carpet is softer to kneel on when I'm rooting around under the dashboard of my neighbour's car finding blown fuses when his daughter has plugged in her defective music player.

For all those with winter tyres - Bobbin Threadbare

I carry a couple of old towels. Very handy for putting down to get up an icy slope. Someone helped me out in that way a few years ago and I've been able to return the favour, as such.

Shame the snow has all gone really ! it was great running around with winter tyres. Do exactly what they say on the tin ! the only down side was that there was no fun as it went everywhere I wanted to go with ease.
L/R in snow mode with snow tyres ! you couldn't do better
