I remember seeing trotted out on the telly that eighty-something% of accidents occur on a road a driver knows well. Suitable "doom and gloom" lecturing followed.
Now I thought that was rather odd, as on the odd occasion that I have had a "moment", it's invariably been when I am in unfamiliar territory.
Then I considered my driving and came to the conclusion that over 99% of it is done on roads I know and use at least fairly regularly and I suspect that this applies to most. So the correct conclusion to draw is that, mile-for-mile, you are actually less likely to have an accident on a known road.
90% of accidents occur within half a mile of your home? Hardly surprising to me as most of my journeys involve being within half a mile of my home for at least, er, half a mile.....
Lies, damned lies and statistics......
