This seemed to start immediately after I had a flat and I put on the spare wheel. I took it to the local National Tyre place and they put on a new tire, fitted, checked, etc. Now there's a horrible worrying whine/hum whenever I slow down in gear - it does not happen when accelerating and goes away if I have the clutch down. The guys at the garage checked all the wheels, bearings, etc and they're convinced it's nothing suspect in or around the wheels - they suggested it may be the gearbox - you can feel a new vibration in the gear stick when you slow down.

Anyone got any similar stories or ideas? If it is a gearbox thing - any way to tell how much I might be in for? It's a 53-reg 1.6 petrol with 76k miles, so won't fetch too much and if big things like this start to go, it might be time to say goodbye.
