I've badgered/reported to Garmin and Navteq (their mapping supplier) but around half the indicated speed limits shown on my Garmin are incorrect. Many limits in Derbyshire have been permanently reduced by 10mph.

Anyone have a definitive answer as to when/how often these data get amended?

I do update my satnav regularly from the interweb thingy.

If only there was some sort of sign at the side of the road to inform you of the speed limit.

Indeed. But 30mph repeaters are ,bizzarely, illegal and so signs are not always there.

When going through the random 30-40-50 mph cycle on the A6 it would ne nice to have a clear back up as to the limits. Noted several signs either missing or hidden recently- another reason to have a back up.

I'm much more law abiding since I was invited to participate in a speed awareness course.

I have the recent down load for the camers/ speed limits, on my garmin.

Some are wrong as you say, but apparently you can report errors, so eventually updates will remendy most of them.

Spain had a temorary reduction of speed limits on motorways for the first half of last year. Garmin reduced the limits on the February update, and them increased back to normal in the mid-year update.

However, generally they are unreliable. Given that Garmin/NavTeq have difficulty keeping maps up-to-date with new construction, speed limits which are frequently changed are a virtual impossibility to get right.

Its going to get even worse for Sat Navs to keep up with the changes in Britain now that every tofu-eating cyclist is demanding 20mph limits across their entire town just to suit them and having them implimented on a whim.
