Corsa 2011 - Buying advice - sam1001
Hi, I've recently been looking in to buying a car and I've chosen to go for a corsa. I had negotiated a deal for a slightly used 2011 registered corsa (1700 miles) for around 9000. However on uk car discount online I found the exact same model but brand new for just over 10k. I'm trying to decide what to do. I'm already pretty stretched as it is and so paying an extra 1.5k would be tough but then again it is a brand new car. Do you guys think it would be worth the extra outlay? I'm planning to use te car for around 2-3 years and then probably sell or trade it in.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is the used Corsa from a Vauxhall dealer and is it a Network Q car? It sounds like it is around six months old, and as such may be either an ex-hire car or an ex-British School of Motoring car. Would it bother you if it was?

Re the new car, if it comes through a Vauxhall franchised dealer it should come with the 100,000 mile/lifetime warranty (subject to being serviced through the Vauxhall dealer network). Check with UK car discount that it does come with the lifetime warranty - if not it should be 3 yrs/60,000 miles.

If it is a new car you want, have you looked at the 'No-VAT' deals that people like Suzuki and Mazda have on currently? Eg the Suzuki Swift SZ2 3dr is priced from £ 8,888. May be worth a look.

I've seen an 06 Corsa with 35,000 miles for sale at a local garage for £2500. Of course, you'd have no warranty other than the SOGA but £8500 saving would probably keep the car maintained for about half a million miles...

Cheers for the reply. Yeah the car is ex rental which I don't particularly mind. I know it's probably been ragged but it's got the manufactures warranty until 2014 so if anything goes wrong it should be covered. It's got a few scratches nothing big though and one of the alloys has been scuffed but other then that it's in really good condition.

The new car wouldn't come with the lifetime warranty but does come with the manufacturers 3 year warranty. At the moment I'm trying to see if my dealer will reduce their price but I'm not sure they will. I'm trying to weigh up if the extra I pay for the new car would be recuperated if I were to see in 2 years or so.

Correct me if im wrong but i dont think Vauxhall's warranty applies to subsequent owners.

the warranty does apply if you register within 1 month of purchase and if you buy from a vauxhall dealer.. that was my understanding at my friendly vx dealer the other day, when i was discussing a nearly new insignia at a good price. the other bit is the annual inspection /registration for the car is separate from the servicing.

From the Vauxhall website:

Yr1 - all new Vauxhall passenger cars are covered by a one year unlimited mileage manufacturers warranty with qualifying repairs at no cost to you.

Yrs 2 and 3 - the manufacturers warranty is extended for two more years up to a maximum of 60,000 miles.

Lifetime - after that Vauxhall provide a unique Lifetime Warranty, available to the first owner for an unlimited time and a maximum of 100,000 miles.

I think for the extended warranty if it's not direct from vauxhall, or second hand you have to pay a fee in order to get it. I'm not really planning on keeping the car for a long time, as I said 2-3 years, so the extended warranty isn't a big point for me. I know I'm gonna make a bit of a loss when I do come to sell it, I;m just trying to see if paying the extra fee for the new car will result in me recieving enough of a higher fee for it when I do come to sell the car to justify the extra outlay.

Depreciations follows an exponential decay curve. The further down the curve you start (ie the older the car), the less you lose at the end.

Yeah that's the thing. Either car will get a few nicks naturally, but I suppose with the new car those will be the only ones it has, where as the used one comes with a few. It's racked up 17000 miles as well, which is a fair amount for roughly 6 months use. I probably won't exceed 8-9000 miles pa. So I suppose do you guys think that if you had two cars of the same model and one had a few less scratches, a years extra MOT less and probably half the miles, would it add around a grand to the price if you were to sell it on?

Suzuki or a Mazda would be a good buy. I quite like the Corsa but it's getting on a little now and has nothing outstanding about it.

Cheers for all the replies. Yeah there are some decent deals at the moment. I'm more specifically looking for a 1.4 as I'll probably be doing a fair bit of motor way driving so these tend to be more towards 9k plus, especially for the newer ones and I'm sort of set on a 5 door as a personal pref, which again is a bit more pricier. at the moment I'm talking to my dealer to see if they can budge anymore on their offer, so hopefully that goes well.

There's a typing error in this topic which may be confusing the issue. In the first post, mileage for the used car is given as 1700, but later it is 17,000.

Corsa 2011 - Buying advice - sam1001
Sorry it should be 17000 miles for the used car. I had put a deposit down for it of 250 so all in all I'd be paying roughly 1.7k more for the new one.

Retgwte (how do you pronounce that?!) and John Boy - it look as if your posts have got cut off by the idiot Microsoft. I have the same problem myself. Instead of the useless IE9 try using Google Chrome or Firefox.
