GM technology and Saab - 475TBJ

What is it with GM wanting to protect technology in Saab? From all I have read the Saab 9-5 ain't up to scratch so what are GM so frightened of? The 9-5 has only got better once there's been a free reign without GM. I guess GM is worried a buyer will end up with the best bits Saab engineers developed for them. I'm under the impression now Saab is in administration GM can no longer dictate the sale.

Saab technology was paid for by GM so belongs to them, no different to Opel or Holden technology. That is of course excluding all the technology developed by their suppliers, eg Haldex's XWD.

But if you take GM against the other big brands, it's "technology" is laughable and many just can't understand what GM was trying to protect

The 9-5 uses the same platform as many current GM cars, in particular it shares a lot with GM's best selling Buick in China. That is the main reason they do not want the 9-5 platform falling into the hands of a Chinese company.

GM is doing well in China and they want to protect their interests.

Perry Itzcovitch of Calgary’s Hyatt Automotive Group, which includes Saab among its stable of dealerships, has harsh words for GM.

“At the end of the day, GM didn’t want the deal to go through,” he says. “To me, they don’t want the technology to go to the Chinese, but I hate to tell them that all that technology is in a Cadillac and it isn’t hard to reverse engineer a vehicle.

It’s like GM wants to see it fail because they couldn’t make it work. In my mind, GM is being irresponsible.”

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he!

Surely it can't be that difficult to copy or replicate the technology?

It can be if there are patents on it. The Chinese are starting to take patent infringement a bit more seriously, now that Chinese owned companies are starting to file them.

At the moment the rumours suggest Saab possibly won't be bought by a Chinese company. :)

It is in the company's interest to spread rumours in order to stimulate interest in the impending fire sale. There's no knight in shining armour carrying a suitcase full of cash I'm afraid.

Brendan Cole, time to step forward. :)

If Saab gets Turkish owners, the company will continue to build cars in Trollhättan, according to Turkish company Brightwell Holdings, which recently entered in the competition over the cash-strapped carmaker.

“We are interested in the whole company, not just small components or the brand,“ said Brightwell board member Zarnier Ahmed to Swedish business paper Dagens Industri (DI).

Ahmed and Brightwell are now waiting to hear from the two official Saab bankruptcy receivers to initiate negotiations.

According to Ahmed, the company intends to continue manufacturing cars in Trollhättan, although he couldn’t say on what scale.

The company needs to know more about the structure of Saab first. It might be that some components would need to be produced somewhere else in order to save money.

Ahmed is not anticipating any problems with former owners General Motors, GM, despite the company’s objections having constituted the largest obstacle for a Chinese sale, due to their blocking of the necessary transfer of technology licences to the two Chinese firms interested.

I hope there won't be any problrms with GM but wouldn't be surprised if there are.
