Why do they call a key fob a PLIP?

It sounds like "plip" when it operates?

I think so. I think Renault coined the term: they may have been the first to develop remote central locking, at about the time I had my first Renault, a 20TS in 1980.

This thread is of more general interest - I'll move it to Motoring discussion.

There was a gentleman in the Sainsbury's car park the other day who actually did the James Bond turn-and-shoot with his keyfob thing to his Audi.

Words fail me.

Renault may have been at the forefront of remote central locking, but they left a really annoying feature in the system. If, after unlocking the car, the car is not started within 30 seconds, the immobiliser is reapplied. Unfortunately, the engine will still crank on the starter causing confusion to anyone not familiar with the system. You have to take the key out of the ignition, 'plip' it locked, then unlock it again! Only the French!

Not only the French - my Subaru did that and my Hyundai locks itself again if youb don't open any doors in the 30 seconds!
