Mercedes-Benz S-Class - Next car??? - geoffken

Considering 2005/7 ish S class. £15,000 to £20,000

Do approx 8000 miles per year so on cusp of diesel petrol debate (very few petrol look to be available) so looking for advice re DPFilters/regen.

Do you have to 50 mile it regularly or do Mercedes have a better system also anything else to watch out for.

Mercedes servicing obviously as well as good rubber as at £200 per corner is expensive.

Any real world figures on diesel vs petrol would be helpful.

Currently running 1998 C class 240 for last 10 years with no problems except beginning to rust on all four wheel arches.

Lots to consider on S class, presumably with air suspension, wear can lead to quite fantastic bills which will make tyre costs look like loose change, lovely car though.

Need specialist advice with this car, and a specialist indy nearby for maintenance which will be expensive, amazingly so if you use a main dealer.

A much more pratical car is the E class circa 2003 on, a 220 cdi has standard rear suspension buy one with 16" tyres then you have a large economical car that will not cost the earth to run.

Agreed, i know of some that are coming up to indeed might have tripped over 400k miles now, very little trouble, maintained well from new by my indy.

Depending on the wheels £200 a tyre could be optimistic. A friend just paid £1300 for 4 replacement tyres on his S class AMG.

This is the S class to buy, LPG it for about £1800, get it to a competent indy annually and enjoy ten years of top end luxury individual motoring for Diesel hatchback costs.

Lovely car, have a look into buying a warranty for it and this will shield you from many expensive bits. My CLK 320 is serviced at an indie Merc specialist and the bilsl aren't that bad. Merc owners club offers lots of advice and gets you 10% off parts too. 8000 miles a year = petrol to me.

A 2003 E-Class is probably about the worst built car you can buy, including a Trabant.

I'd avoid any W211 E-Class before 2006 model year.

In the price bracket mentioned you should be looking at the current W221 S-Class, not the older W220. They are nice cars and far better than what went before - at that mileage I'd go petrol and look for one with a few miles on it (80k-100k) with full Mercedes history and some nice options.

No point in paying a big premium for low mileage at 8k a year as it will lose a lot of money just sitting there.

Have you ever owned one I doubt it because you are talking rubbish.

Yes, I know the cars well. They're very poor with lots of designed in faults, not bad when they work but a car Mercedes openly acknowledged was their nadir.

Hi Geoffken, I'd do a lot of research before buying.

I'm not certain but was this period one of a number of years where Mercedes quality plummetted?

Many dyed-in-the-wool Mercedes owners found to their cost that vehicles made during the early part of the decade were poor.

I'm by no means 100% about the actual years in question but, as I said, I'd do the research before you take the plunge.

Good luck

Thanks for all replies and gratefully noted.

Very few petrol unless 5 litre which really are an overkill.

Was hoping for advice/info re regen cycle as I understand fixing this afterwards can be a £1000 bill.

Ideally would like a trade in ex Merc dealer but dealers will not sell many/any cars over 3 year old but may try and cultivate local dealer Newcastle on tyne who may point me in direction of private trade in with proper pre sale independent inspection and 12 month warranty purchase.

realise after a year you are in lap of gods anyway.

thanks again
