I was walking along a back street in Tewkesbury when a marked van passed slowly by markings indicated ANPR. and what was different about it it had 4 cameras one at each corner. The usual vans have a window at the rear with camera inside and are stationary at roadsid, what came into my mind was checking for untaxed/sorned vehicles, hence camera at each corner.

Saw van circle the Makro car park, up/down every aisle............no luck as he did not stop. The following week they bagged up the road from me - clamped and big notices about no rfl/ins/mot.

It's a cost-effective way of catching criminals.

Law-abiding citizens, ie the vast majority of people, have nothing to fear from this sort of enforcement.

I saw a Chicken Oxo detector van in the 1970's.

As RT said if you are law abiding nothing to worry about.

On our street there are 2 builders who never tax their vans when they are due, one ran out last month, annoys the hell out of me. One guy on the street never sells his old cars, just keeps them on the drive, bet his 1988 Nova which is now covered in moss is not on SORN or insured. Family at end of street run an S type Jag for the summer and a Ford Explorer for the winter, both have same plate, wonder if they really pay £80 twice a year to transfer the plate, keep meaning to look at the tax disk as I walk past.

I just report untaxed vehicles.

If they are on his drive, why does this upset you so much? Not altogether sure why is deemed necessary to insure a car that is parked up and unused either, particularly if you aren't too worried about it being stolen?

It upsets me because he is breaking the law, the insured part came in some time this year, and I was threatened with a fine when the DVLC made a mistake about one of my cars. It was on a SORN (and insurred) and in the garage but the DVLA had not noted the fact and sent me an £80 fine, when I sent them a copy of the paperwork they quickly cancelled the fine.

Its the law and should apply to everyone exactly the same, I am asking for nothing other than what is fair and just.

It costs nothing to SORN anyway and since the cars on his drive will never be driven again why does he not simply have the council to take away the cars, its free.

To only detect chicken without also flagging beef is pretty good discrimination for 1970s technology.

The Nova doesn't need Sorn or insurance!

The Nova doesn't need Sorn or insurance!

Thought all cars that had not been scrapped and were not taxed had to be sorn'd. DVLA made an administrative error some years ago and issued me with a fine for not having my car sorn'd, admitted their error when i produced a copy of the paperwork but did not appologise. Not honestly sure about insurnace rules but one of my cars is currently on a sorn and is insured and there has been much press about the need to do this..

SORN - sirionman

The keeper of a vehicle must keep it insured unless they have made a SORN declaration. Therefore the statement "The Nova doesn't need Sorn or insurance" is incorrect.

The keeper of that vehicle should be afraid.

SORN - Bromptonaut

The keepr of the Nova probably ought to check with DVLA. If the vehicle has been formally withdrawn from use or has been off road since before the SORN regime came in then no offence I think.

SORN - jc2

Depends on date of last tax.

Nothing to fear assuming the various databases are 100% accurate - which is, of course, impossible. Perfectly innocent motorists WILL have their cars impounded or clamped.
