the last 2 cars we've bought approx 3years old cars.
The salesman when walking round car car in both cases have pointed out how well the previous owner looked after the car and wasn't it clean....
I always go to the rear wheel arches and run my hand around the inner lip....in both cases got a handful of mud.....that usually stops the sales waffle so we can talk about prices etc etc....
I use a hose and adjust to jet to suit....and spend about 10mins washing out all 4 wheel arches....sometimes its better just to use a hose and stick your finger over the end so you can bend the spray right under the arches...and when i get a replacement car i spray some wax oil under there..my wife owned one of the only mk3 fiestas without rust around the petrol filler cap and wheel arches down our road....
had enough of rust in my metro and escort mk2,3, mk1 MR2 owning days to put me off the stuff..

Now that is an achievement!! :-D

Cheers corax, yup corrosion is my concern, although I know Citroens are pretty good it doesn't hurt to get all that crud out.
|
I must be dreaming, thats several replies from people who look after their cars in the important places, the bits out of sight....i thought us dinosaurs were extinct..:-)
More surprising still is that someone who's never looked at a modern car underneath hasn't come along to say that all this is a waste of time because cars no longer rust, quoting galvanising usually.
Remember boys and girls it takes but minutes to hose wet salty filth off from underneath if you do it regularly during the winter months, then in the spring a really good underbody wash when the final salt has cleared...then a brake clean/lubcricate then a splosh round with the grease or waxoyl when it's dry paying special attention to all brake and fuel pipes (waxoy pref)...then keep your cars cos they will last years.
On the subject of plastic arches, we bought a C2 last year with only 20 odd k miles on it, i pulled the front liners out and was astonished just how much muck there was, there is a nasty spot where the liners meet the sills and this was packed with muck i had to dig out, all cars have traps and ledges somewhere that need regular cleaning and treating..
|
We owned a Peugeot 106 for 17 years. We never removed the plastic liners. When it was crashed into, the liners were torn off by the impact. There was NO rust..
There was rust on the nuderside boot floor - not exposed to road spray - where all 106s/Saxos rot.. Treated with Waxoil.
The bootfloor was not ganlanised and had little seamsealer..
The wheelarches were hosed (not power washed) underneath monthly in winter and occasionally in summer to remove mud etc.
I am going to do the same with our current cars..
As for remvoing arch liners, I don't own a rusting Merc so can't be bothered.

That told you GB, better get that car creeper out and waxoyl in a bucket of warm water and a chiropractor on hand for when you emerge. No, hang on, I think he's talking about the later models. Hope so anyway :)))

lol corax
Any Merc from 95 to 2004.
Too modern for GB I know, anything not a 124 is the spawn of the devil..
(But 124s rust as well - eventually...My BIl has a 3litre diesel estate owned since 1 year old.. in white designed to show the dirt :-)
|
Speaking of cleaning cars what is it with black cars? Mine looks gorgeous after a polish but if i drive it 7 yards it looks horrible again.
|
Know what you mean jamie. over the years owned a
black:-
mk2 golf, metro, mr2, puma and finally a Impreza..
great when cleaned and waxed,,,and all the plastic covered in back to black etc...but 5mins later fine dust from the road, or yellow pollen from the farmers fields.......
prefer it to white though,,,,waxing a white car in the summer makes your eyes go wacky..
my car smells like a chemical factory inside when its clean...my wifes car on the other hand being the main child and dog carrier always smells like a wet dog...hahahaa

Just hold tight whilst youi are using it as the lance can become somewhat unwieldy with the jet reaction

Oy you lot..;)
If it wasn't for regular waxoyling and the fact my old girl goes in every couple of years to my local one man and his dog bodyshop to get the chips etc fettled it would probably look pretty ropey by now, most coupes and convertibles in good condition are second or fair weather cars, mine sees all weathers and is my daily driver.
Even the 124 doesn't hold a candle to the rust resistance of Volvo's trusty old 2, 7 and 9 series, which must be among the most rust resistant and simplest cars on the road, i believe the pre facelift (pre92) 124's were better built and had better paint and therefore lasted better than the later models, always felt more solid to me.
Mind you there's a K reg Corolla in white around the corner from us in regular use with a nice looking mature lady owner and it looks like it just rolled off the production line...one of the most reliable durable cars ever?

I was sat behind a R reg red Corolla last night in a queue of traffic. Not a ding on it, the red was like new (but not modern paint, it looked 'original') and the bumper was scratch-free. They're still a nice design as well; don't seem to age. Obviously well looked after.

Indeed they do. Both wings on my 1996 W124 have been replaced in my tenure this year. I know of a 1992 Peugeot 205, which has far less rust on its bodywork than my Merc.
BTW I've had 3 Corollas, from the 80s and 90s. All were good!
|
You will be pleased, over-joyed in fact, to learn that my 'lingo now has the cleanest arches and sills in Surrey.
I must have been a sight for sore eyes, purple marigolds and sleeves rolled up. Manly.
Despite two jetwashings, they were still filty. I used S-Doc 1000 motorbike cleaner as it's very, very good, but not fierce/caustic.
So there you go. :o)

Surrey? Horse country..
One horse pat and your work is wasted..

Pity the same can't be said for the J reg ones! The previous generation were rust buckets. Shame, because, as with most Toyota products they were well built and nicely finished.
Curiously, my car seems to have stopped rusting since I gave up garaging it. It lives on an exposed street and the wind seems to be the best inhibitor of rust.

Well once there's a sacrificial layer of rust coating all of the bodywork, no further rust will appear ;-)
|
Bah!
Next you'll be saying that the magic crank seal that fixed its own leak was just due to the engine running out of oil.
nb. Rust spalls and doesn't form passive coatings [rasp!]
|
^ LMFAO at the banter
My brother's 1996 Proton has remained (visibly) rust-free despite lack of washing over winters, since it was relegated from the garage in 2006 to make way for my motorbike.
|
I once dated a young lady who described a puncture she got on her car as being 'only flat at the bottom.'
|
I sincerely hope she had 'other attributes' that made up for the airheadedness ;o)
|
Oh absolutely, and one of those attributes meant she couldnt speak at the time which was good news all round!
|
;o)
This place has certainly livened up a bit since I posted regularly when I last owned a car (2006/7)
|
Well thats because im so outrageously interesting and sexy you see.
Oh yes, you know it.
|
Mute was she?
I'm glad you could see past the disability and appreciate the real person.
|
Harrrr harrrr
Mute girl wouldnt be so bad actually, means she cant say no.....
