Mazda 6 TS2 2.0d (2008) - Release bearing/Gearbox issues - Lee Toland

Hi All,

Long time reader, first time questioner!

I'm looking at buying a Mazda6 TS2 2.0d (2008) with 49k on the clock from a local mazda dealer. Test drove the car and love it, but it was making a fairly harsh sqealing noise throughout the drive. Car has been sat on a forecourt for a while, so I figured nothing serious (lubrication issues or maybe the cambelt needed tightening) but asked them to sort it and I'd re-test drive it before I confirmed anything.

They've just rung me back telling me it was a worn release bearing in the gearbox causing the problem, and they've opened the gearbox, replaced it and lubricated everything else for good measure... All fixed and sorted. I then had a read through here and am getting a bit concerned that this could just be the start of the problems with the Gearbox/Clutch.

Should I be worried that there has been an issue with the transmission so early on (49k)? I've never once had a single issue with a clutch or a gearbox in any car I've ever driven (20 years, change car every 3 years or so and i do about 25k a year myself). Does anyone know what could have caused this issue? Is it likely to be a recurring problem, or just down to the driving style of the previous owner?

Any thoughts/help very welcome... I'm due to test drive the car again tomorrow afternoon and put a deposit down, but I'm concerned it's be fine when I get there and then there'll be major/multiple problems in the very near future...

Cheers all

Lee, I think you should search this forum for threads on this model - look particularly in Technical up to 1 year back - and you'll see a particular thread that had 100 posts.

There have been horrendous engine problems with the 2.0 diesel in the 6, and most people are saying 'steer clear'.

If you need a long-lasting diesel - as with 25k miles a year you do - you may do best to look for a VW, Skoda, Audi or SEAT with the 1.9 TDI engine.
