Audi - Russian Doll design language to die - about ****** - Trilogy

At last someone at Audi has realised that all their designers do to create a new model is shrink an existing one or enlarge it.

This news will come too late for many who are now converted to other marques.

Agreed. If I were spending up to 6 figures on an A8 it would need to look nothing like A4 'middle management' repmobile.

There's nothing new under the sun. Just at random I can think of the Austin 10/12/14/20 of the late 30s and 8/10/12/16 of 1939-48, and the Morris Minor/Oxford/Six of c. 1950.

And at various times BMW and Mercedes haven't been exempt from this sort of thing: no matter, it didn't hit sales any more than it has for Audi.

(Sorry, Trilogy - I don't know what the swear filter was objecting to here or perhaps you typed the asterisks yourself!)

Indeed, nothing new at all, but rival companies car designers have started to talk about Audi's boring Russian Doll design language. That's not my term, it's their one. I believe the styling boss at Hyundai coined the phrase.

Avant, to be on the safe side I typed all the asteriks myself. The word begins with a * and ends with a *. :)

Sorry to be a party pooper but I like Audi designs ! Their coupes look great and the saloons stand the test of time by looking good after many years by not following all the latest trends eg overstyled massive headlights.

Theres only two cars from the VW Group i'd ever really want. VW Phaeton and Bentley Continental GT.

You don't fancy a Murcielago, Gallardo or Aventador ?

Too conspicious, nobody expects a VW saloon to be faster than their car, regardless of what they've got. Hehe.

I almost think that is what you pay for, ie not over-agressive built-in obsolescence where the other manufacturers change the complete design of the car every few years. Even the B6 shape A4 isn't massively different from the current B8 shape car although they may be separated by 11 years now. The models just move on with subtle design cue's and under the skin improvements, without the constant need to add more twinkly bits of trim or spacecraft-style interiors.

'The models just move on with subtle design cue's and under the skin improvements.'

Much to the chagrin of Audi dealers.

I think Audi have seen the light. Skoda certainly have some interesting cars on the way in 2012/2013 including segments which are new to them.

Suits me if they all look the same. They mostly seem to be driven by reckless, speeding idiots in suits these days and so I can easily identify where they are and avoid them like the plague...
