Petrol vs diesel price difference - Trilogy

Today I noticed petrol and 130.9 per litre while diesel was a whopping 11 pence more at 141.9 pence. Not long ago the diffence was as little as 2 or 3 pence. I wonder why the price difference has become such a gulf?

Diesel is about 4p a litre more in its basic cost price according to petrolprices.com

Garages regularly take 1 or 2p off petrol and put it on diesel or vice versa and with higher VAT now that makes a bigger gap when they do that.

Diesel costs more to produce than petrol. In winter demand for diesel/kerosene for heating increases. More diesel cars than ever before.

Supply and demand.

Perhaps, but it's the other way round on the other side of the channel .... I always fill up with diesel returning from France.

In france and other EU countries, diesel has favourable tax treatment. In the netherlands, petrol has punitive tax. UK has broadly similar tax on petrol and diesel.

Thats politics for yer.

Diesel costs more to produce than petrol.

What !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suspect the statutory need to add 5% biodiesel and low sulphur requirement are 2 reasons why diesel costs more to produce.

Not only that, most refineries are tailored to wring as much petrol as possible out of every barrel of crude, as that's what was required.

The dash to diesel courtesy of the CO2 lunacy has dropped petrol sales and pushed up diesel.

The oil industry can either: a) spend many hundreds of millions replacing refineries early with ones more suited to producing diesel via secondary cracking processes or b) push up the price of diesel and drop that of petrol to reduce demand for diesel and drive up demand for petrol at no cost to them

As they're not stupid, "b" is the preferred option.

I am boiling mad about this myself as diesel around here is 10p/L dearer than unleaded.

As duty is the same and as diesel is an easier and more abundant product from crude oil, this is just a big huge rip-off and we can't do anything about it.

There is more competition for the 'fraction' that diesel comes from, as stated above. Diesel prices always go up a couple of pence in winter because of the much higher demand for heating oil, etc

My local station 132.9 for petrol and a huge 144.9 for diesel. As has been mentioned diesel costs more before tax, i think a litre of petrol is around 48p where as diesel is closer to 52p, the duty level is the same of course but a higher rate of VAT means theres a bigger difference if a garage takes 2p off one to put on the other. My local garage does that alot, one day it'll be 132.9 and 144.9 then the next its 134.9 and 142.9.

Its yet another argument for avoiding diesel really, with some petrol cars now offering diesel-ish economy without the reliablity troubles of modern diesels, running on fuel which costs 10% cheaper it looks a better option.

I think there is !

Its about time we just ground the country to a halt & refused to go to work by car ! I am fed up with being dictated to by polotics and we just have to accept this supply & demand bollards !. I have many friends paying out a fortune in fuel and some paying over £600 a month just in fuel to get to work and home again ! I would ask myself is it worth it ? I think not ! If the majority of the country stopped driving to work, probably two weeks and action would have to be taken ! so couple of weeks of hardship but unless we stand our ground we will never have a result !

Fuel in my area is 130.9 but 141.9 for Derv currently. Its wierd how few miles over the water & its the other way around in france and they have far more diesel than petrol cars !

Alternatively investigate using a mix of waste (filtered) veg oil/diesel mix, if you have an older diesel. I know someone who runs a W124 E300 diesel on 100% waste veg oil. Personally I don't think 100% is a good idea. I've alos heard of someone running an older Audi A3 on waste veg oil. I didn't think diesels of that era (Audi 1.9 TDi) would run on veg oil.

I think we'll see a transfer towards more petrol cars in the next few years, diesel vehicle purchase prices are too high and there are questions over the reliability.

Larger cars are better off as diesels but smaller class A-C cars are usually far better as petrol.

Then when there are more petrol than diesel cars Petrol will be dearer than Diesel because in Britain we are too polite and just get ripped off by Bankers & poloticians !

Petrol is currently 13p/ltr in Dubai ! We pay over 10X that !!!!!!!!!!

It was 11p back in 2009

Maybe we should all revive this theory;

Generally my 306 diesel has been pretty reliable over the 8 years I've had it. You have less to components to worry about which aren't fitted to diesels. I wouldn't go back to a petrol car now.

Diesels were much simpler in 2001 (the last year of 306). Since then to achieve Euro IV & Euro V diesels have become much more complex and unreliable.

Petrol cars have moved on as well but as yet have not required Particulate Filters(Euro VI??).

A litre of diesel weighs considerably more than a litre of petrol and contains more energy therefore the difference the price.

Sainsburys by my mothers sell petrol 128.9 and diesel 133.9 as do both Asda and Esso
