Hi,

I've a 122K mile Astra with the Isuzu td engine. It's been great, with only the need for occasional shimming up of the valves. I'd like the same engine in an estate. If Vauxhall has stopped using this engine, what's the latest year I can get?

Thanks,

Blitz

Can't answer your question I'm afraid but I will be interested in the answer as a relative is looking for a relatively inexpensive diesel car.
One suggestion I've made is an Astra with the Isuzu engine so if you oculd give your impressions of owning said car and anything to look out for I'd be grateful.

No, not that one.

I had a Cav with this engine, and it's a nice lump. Certainly one of the best old style indirect injection engines. Very relible as long as the oil's been changed when needed.

Mine had done over 110K and was still smooth and refined. Plus very economical.

Hateful engines.

They shake the whole car with too much vibration at idle, the deisn of the alternator with incorporated steering pump (I think) costs a fortune and breaks quite regularly, as does the wiring to the alternator.

Even when new the clutches grate when depressed.

Economy was very poor. 35mpg when booted. only achieved 40mpg at steady 75mph.

I had one for 4 years :(

you must have had a dud, Keith.

I'm not going to wax lyrical over this engine but at its worst it is not bad! True it doesn't measure up to modern diesels but it is smooth and economical. Mine does not fail to do at least 48mpg and usually its over 50. It doesn't seem to make a jot of difference if these are motorway miles over 80 or stop start town driving. I'm one of those sad geezers who fills up the tank to the brim so I constantly check these things.

Agree with the alternator problem - mine went once but that is hardly regularly in 157K. The thing is still going strong and my dilemma is what to replace it with when it finally gives up the ghost (that may be tomorrow, or in the next decade ... who knows)

Hi Matt,

Sorry about the late reply - have had computer trouble.

I've found my 1994 Astra pretty good. I bought it at 61k miles and have put on the same again. Since I've had the car, it has had only a new set of door locks, a new elec window switch, a rocker cover gasket and a water pump. I'm satisfied with that as I've spent far more on Fords in the past.

The car averages about 45mpg. I have it serviced by a travelling mechanic who tells me that the 'running gear' on these Astras is excellent.

Hope this helps. Thanks to all those others who replied.

Thanks for that, do you know what the lifespan of the timing belt is please & have you changed it in the 60K miles you've done ?

No, not that one.

I put 50K on a Cavalier with this engine in 18 months just tyres and oil and filter changes every 4,500 miles which was a drag but not expensive. I averaged 45mpg+ with no problems. It's not quick by modern standards but it's a lot smoother and quieter than my Passat TDi PD so on my experience I reckon if it's been looked after you'll be pleased.
