Are modern catalytic convertors different? - mss1tw

I haven't had the misfortune to get a lungful of the sulphurous stench that used to be common about 10 years.

Have they changed the design? Or are they mostly all broken by now and catalysing nothing?

better fuel injection and engine management systems help, as does the lower sulphur content in fuel. I have never smelt my latest car, except for the odd "whiff" sometimes when the diesel particulate filter is cycling, or re-generating.

If you can't smell it , that means it is working properly, be happy, very happy!

That's true, I haven't smelt it for 10 years either, even with the same car. I wonder why they reduced they sulphur content. they must take it out and put it in something else they can make more money out of.

Sulphur content of fuel was reduced dramatically a few years ago for a number of reasons but primarily as it kills catalytic convertors over time.

Removing sulphur from fuel costs money and so make fuel more expensive. The smell was due to Hydrogen Sulphide being created in the cat which is highly toxic and obviously undesirable for more than just the reason of smell.

Hydrogen sulphide is actually just as lethal as Hydrogen Cyanide in the same concentrations, so don't try getting high by sniffing stink bombs.

Don't know about different, but they're being stolen on a regular basis ,especially on mercedes commercials.

A friend has just had 3 stolen from his parcel delivery fleet. Very expensive to replace and hugely disruptive to his business .

I wonder if it's possible to make the cats more difficult to steal by additional welding, to fasten the whole exhaust together.

I understand the cats contain platinum ,any ideas how much a cat is worth as scrap.
