At last insurance companies act sensibly.

But why all wheels? I'm talking with a guy from Micigan, where they do have a lot of snow, and he just laughed at it. Says just the driven wheels.

Was it a sort of crazed, manic laugh, the sort that suggests he doesn't really care and wishes the sort of harm on people that comes from having two wheels that don't grip on snow and two that do?

One of the ways to unsettle a car for skid pan fun is to give the front wheels grip and the rear end slicks. Anyway, they don't have bends in the States. Except New England coastal area.

Why all 4 wheels - it's simple

When you drive a car with different levels of grip front / rear, as soon as you turn, or brake the wheels with lesser grip will start to skid, and you will loose control of the vehicle. It's fine in an empty car park, but do this at 30 in a country lane and you'll quickly find the nearest ditch.

Now that you've been told, just think about your passengers, or pedestrians nearby, or another car's passengers ... as it may not be the ditch you find.

What is the point of winter tyres.

All you need to do is drive more carefully, not brake on courners and that should be enough.

A bit more grip wont make that much difference...

Life or death, crashing or not crashing. A bit more grip can make all the difference. You only need to go to youtube to see comparison videos.

Try traversing a few hills in somewhere like Yorkshire in summer tyres first thing in the morning after the compacted snow has frozen over, then come back here and tell us how you got on.

>> not brake on corners

That's OK until there's a queue of vehicles sitting stationary around a blind bend, and it's icy. There's too many variables in winter, especially in some areas of the country, to 'make do' with summer tyres. And a bit more grip makes all the difference between ending up in a ditch or getting home.

Tests show that they reduce the braking distance by around half.

99% of the time you don't need winter tyres, but I have had a few moments where I have almost been stuck. This was all on relatively level roads though, if I wouldn't even try steep hills when there's deep snow. It depends on so many factors though - the type of car, type and size of the tyres, tyre wear/pressures etc.

Winter tyres on the of a back of a front wheel drive car?

Don't forget, most older american cars are rear wheel drive.
