There are others better qualified to comment on what you should pay but if the history is good, and the toys all work ok, that engine is pretty bomb proof when all the right servicing is done.
They are very comfortable work horses that still manage to drive well. I agree with Slender that the mpg is likely to be mid twenties combined and low thirties on a trip.
Getting an independent check on has to be money well spent.

A month ago I bought a V70 XC. This has the same engine you seek and is also allied to an automatic. Fuel economy around town is reasonable at 20mpg. Country lane driving sees that improve to mid 20`s whilst steady driving on the motorway brings low 30`s. Mine has four wheel drive as well, so that will keep the figures lower than the model you`re considering. The car is supremely comfortable (the main reason I bought it), has done 84000 miles in just over 4 years and has been well looked after by Volvo. It has had a couple of minor niggles since I bought it but these have been attended to by a local dealer. The supplying dealer, over 100 miles away from where I live, has picked up the tab for repairs so i can`t complain about the service. The `box is good and the engine smooth and powerful.
I also considered a Mitsubishi Galant estate which was a little too small in the cabin for me. It did look to be a nice vehicle, mind you.
Decisions, decisions........

Sorry, forgot to say that mine is a `98 R.

My 1995 2.0 20v has the SE spec - v solid (apart from an extremely iritating rattle that has developed from the tailgate), definitely the most comfy car out of Saab 900, A-Class, Golf mkII & many others. Did 800 miles over the weekend without a twinge of back pain or stiffness. Feels as tight as a 2-yr-old car, auto box is great, dealer (main) is lovely so far.
Oh & Seasons Greetings to all (my routine has changed over the past 6 months from "work" to "work for 5 mins, look at HJ site, work for 5 mins, look...")
